Hi Friends,
Here's my first effort at a full song. It's called "When the Cows Come Home."

It uses BIAB's Marley1.Sty style.

I used the Reaper DAW. The Real Drums are used directly as audio.

The "BB Bass" was put though TAL Bassline VST, "Soft Bass" path;
"BB Organ" was put through Synth1 VST, "Rock Organ" patch;
"BB Guit1 Clean" was put through Suburban Guitarist VST; and
"BB Guit2 Mute" was played by "sfz" using a "Mute Guitar" soundfont.

Vocals were recorded by me. I've lost track of the F/X chain temporarily, but there was some compression, de-essing, and tune correction. Sorry about missing this detail.
"Sax" was MIDI recorded by me on keyboard through the DVS Saxophone VST.
I used the "Reaverb" VST for global reverb.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Sam! Welcome to the forum!

Man, you just jump right in... your very first post is a song submission!

I liked the way your song started with an unlikely premise for getting back together, then ramped it up to progressively less-likely scenarios. Clearly this song is about a guy who will never EVER forget whatever it is that offended him!

The Marley style really made the song fun to listen to, and I thought the MIDI sax sounded surprisingly sax-like (most MIDI saxes don't sound much like a sax to me at all). The fact that you were able to use a MIDI sax (and therefore control the notes) allowed you to echo your melody in the sax, which I thought added a LOT to the overall impact of the song.

The irony of using a reggae style for this song is that reggae typically creates a very laid-back mood, but the theme of the song was very resolute and not laid back at all... therefore the presence of two conflicting moods served to emphasize the understated and whimsically described conflict between the wills of the two parties in the song. Very interesting.

I thought this was a grand introduction to the forum, and I look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi J&B,
Thanks for the nice words. That bass is a patch called "Soft Bass" from the TAL Bassline VST. But I raised all the notes up one octave.
Have fun,
Sam B.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for listening and saying nice things. You hit the nail exactly: I loved the contrast of "happy"-sounding reggae and the unhappy singer, plus the idea of the singer getting progressive farther from reality.

This is my first post but I've done lots of lurking and I've owned BIAB for many years. Truthfully the standards are so high here, I've been intimidated, but I appreciate the kind and constructive people here.

Thanks again,
Sam B.

the bar is indeed set very high here due to having quite a few amazingly talented songwriters present on the forum. But you're certainly no slouch, and I think you have entered the game well above newbie level. You fit right in, and I do hope to hear more from you.

HAHAHA!

Welcome, Sam. A terrific entry...

Well put together. Clever song.

I don't think there's much hope for the relationship, though....

A high class job for a first song effort, well done! The vocal harmony parts are a good hook. I'm always a sucker for a good reggae.
cool

This works very well!! The vibe just works-I could imagine it playing at a dance club (that plays Reggae). Really nice natural vocal sound and good mix. Good stuff! Take care. Greg

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
