A questions for all you guitarists out there. I've been experimenting with trying to get something that resembles Hank Marvin's famous guitar sound when I'm playing live. Right now I'm using two delays; one set for a short slap back delay, and the other set for 300 ml seconds. I add some spring reverb and this gets me pretty close. I know there are several pedals out there that supposedly do a pretty good job. Any recommendations?

I appreciate it.

Thanks Bob,

Yeah, that's the video I used as a guide. I'm looking for hopefully one pedal that will do the job.

It is a great sound.

This one sounds a lot better for that sound:

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Now you've set me thinking. It's a great sound and I have the TCElectronic multi-effects unit. Hopefully I can get it with that. I've never tried before. It has the tremelo sound on it which is kind of nice as well.

I'm thinking or ordering one of these:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Mooer/Reecho-Digital-Delay-Guitar-Effects-Pedal.gc

The price is right and it seems like it will give me something close to what I'm after in one pedal. For anyone else also interested in Hank's sound, I'll post my results.

From the discussion thread of the Youtube link from 90 dB:

"Why go to all that bother when you can buy a purpose built Shadows Echo Box such as a RFX 2000, or a Q2 box or even the new Shadexs box which cost under £40,00 (50$) and they are all pre programed in against the title of the tune"

However, not finding evidence of the existence of the 'Shadexs' box.

Pretty much any Zoom G series pedal will allow you to chain two different delays together.

Feedback is set just high enough on both delays to give a single 'repeat' of the original signal.

Shorter delay goes before the longer delay. At least that's the way I would do it, but the 'instructional video' shows a guy doing the longer delay first in the chain.

I'll see if I can set up a patch in my Zoom G5. Zoom G3 units have pretty much the same signal processing.

Here's a guy doing it with guitar and effects for under 200 pounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HANfN7Bd-0o

He's using a Zoom G1 ON which is a cut-down version of the G5/3. $50 at Sweetwater:

BTW - that G1 has amp simulation built in, so you can go directly out of it into a PA or recording setup because it has Vox amp simulation built in.

Thanks Scott for your info.

I have looked into the Q2 and RFX 2000. It looks like you have to find these used and then download patches to get the Shadow's sounds. Too much $$ and effort for what I'm after. Honestly, I'm really not trying to become a Hank clone. There are plenty of guys on YouTube who have that pretty much nailed down.

I did look into the Zoom pedals and will consider them as an option after I've tried the Mooer Reecho: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Mooer/Reecho-Digital-Delay-Guitar-Effects-Pedal.gc

I like the idea of having one simple pedal for the effect when I need it.

Right now I'm using an old Ibanez Soundtank delay pedal for my slap back followed by some spring reverb (Holy Grail pedal) and then the delay on my Fender Super Champ XD amp set at 450 ml.

Gets me pretty close.

Sounds like you have it sorted out. It seems like the key is two delays in series, with one set at the 450 and the other set at 150 or so

Well, I received my Moorer Reecho and I'm very impressed. It seems to really do a good job recreating some "old school" analog delay sounds. The tape echo setting is very "Hank" sounding to my ear. And the price is right!

The price is right on that pedal too. Glad you found your sound.

I'm Jonesin' for one of these:

Would look real nice on top of my Classic 30! grin

Thanks Bob,

Yeah the Reverb unit definitely would look & sound cool.

At this point in my gigging career (61 and still rockin') less/lighter/smaller is more...if you know what I mean.

As for some sweet "surfy" spring reverb this has really done the trick for me: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HolyGrailN

Hi mate.
Look up Charlie Hall's Forum. He was Hank Marvin's tech guy and there's nothing he doesn't know about The Shadows' echoes, better than anyone else.

It depends just how accurate you want to be as it can be a very involved procedure.

The best echo units to get the EXACT shadows echoes are:
Alesis Q20
Alesis Q2 plus some modofied earlier Alesis ones

Yamaha Magic Stomp. I have this one and not only does it get the right echoes it even emulates the right amp sound - though you'll have to set your own amp up as well.

Check out my 'Apache' on YouTube. I did it years ago but it's a good example. This was recorded using a Korg AX300G for better amp simulation, and the Yamaha Magic Stopm for the echoes, these then went straight into a mixing desk then to the computer.
