Hi gang.

I love Reaper for the flexibility but... whenever I load a Midi track, I get no sound and need to find an extension to play.

Reaper has so many extensions but I can't find one to play Midi (incl drums).

Can someone point me to a solution. Or.. where I can get a Reaper (free) Midi playback extension?

Thanks in advance.

I move all my BIAB midi eventually into Reaper. Works great.

Do you have Sampletank or something equivalent? Or how about EZDrummer or something like it? You need a sound synth.

I do have Sampletank but I find it to be a headache (it always manages to hassle me). And so I don't use / like it. I can't afford EZDrummer (small pension).

Open to more suggestions, but reluctantly willing to use Sampletank if that's all there is.

Thanks for responding.

There are many options which we can recommend and many will be free, however, Is BIAB your only experience with ST?. SampleTank in Reaper is not like SampleTank in BIAB! It is much much more user friendly.

I will point you in a few directions this weekend when I have some time on my system.

"Is BIAB your only experience with ST?" Yes to that.
I'll gladly wait for your further reply ... thanks.

Found a solution: Coyote WT showed up in Reaper as a DXi and it is working for me. Tried Sampletank -- still don't like it. Also ST only showes PG Music's files.

PS: had to re-install Coyote today in BIAB, it went missing. Guess that's how Reaper found it.

For the type of music / work I do, Coyote WT will do for me.
Thanks (again) for responding. Much appreciated.

OK, but Coyote WT uses the original limited MS sounds which many would agree is what gave midi a bad name. If it works for you, fine. But when you finish a piece in Reaper please send it to me and I will substitute the synth so you can at least see if it sounds different.

Hey, I personally like cheap beer. I don't pay for the expensive stuff cause it just tastes the same to me. Maybe your hearing is a bit of the same.

Do you only have the free ST2 which came with BIAB and the limited library of sounds?

Yes, I did have a full range of ST instruments but have had to delete them due to a shortage of disk space.

As for a better sound - I really am an "old" fart with some hearing loss in both ears so I would not likely appreciate the difference.

I appreciate the correspondence, I'm going to leave it with Coyote WT. Whatever music I make / play with, is to keep me busy in my retirement years and something to do during the day.

Thanks and take care.

Hi fanbrits johnson and welcome to the forum. I haven't heard of saverunet so I did a quick search of the term and came up with nothing relative to music. Can you provide more detail on your answer?

DEddy,

Just a thought. A daw called ++ MultiTrack Studio ++ has modeled instruments built-in. While it adheres to the 128 instrument general midi (GM) standard for the most part it does replace the 16 sound effect instruments with more traditional instruments like guitar or bass.

It's nice to be able to call up a nice sounding midi instrument that's built into the daw instead of an add on. I don't have the program yet but plan on getting it. There are a few forum members that use it as I first discovered the program here.

Thanks Jim for the info.

MultiTrack Studio is $69. Reaper 5 is $60 (I have ver 4) but it's "very" flexible; easiest DAW I've ever used. Reaper now has a video / tutorial web page.

Always like hearing about music software.

I worked last weekend putting together a video for you to show how nice ST3 works in Reaper...

Well all hell broke lose on my computer as I tried to tweak setting to get the video. Computer is now down until I figure out how to reconfigure sounds (I have another thread here in the forum on this). ST3 was also giving me fits as some of the midi routing got messed up with a current Reaper update and I had to redo all the routing.

Just letting you know your tread has had a big impact here... crazy

Music Student: always nice to hear from you. Sorry to hear about your computer problems.

I've got an older (not as old as me) Lenovo ThinkPad computer with only 13GB left on my hard drive. I'll need a lottery before I can upgrade.

Still ... looking forward to seeing the video you mentioned.

Take care.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
