I've noticed that BIAB likes to randomly generate parts based on chord progressions for RTs. While I'm ok with have doing that with my chord progression, I would like be able to have a way to save the generated background real track, so that when I go to play the entire song, I know the background track will fit the way I want it to. The way I could see this work, is what I would like to call the "Best of Real Tracks" option. So, they way this would work is that when you load a RT, say any background track, BIAB would give you three randomly generated tracks, and if you have the best of option on, you could listen to those three tracks and decide which one you like. BIAB would then render that choice as a separate .wav file that could either go into a special folder or somehow go into the folder where the file your BIAB session is in. Now, for those of you who prefer to go the extra mile and want to have an exact part written out they way you have it in your head, that's cool, but I'm thinking of this more for someone like me for really just wants a background part in the style rather than something to replicate a part.

P.S. Sometimes I do want to have certain parts played as it sounds in the song, meaning I do want to write the parts out myself, for more control.

Islansoul,

Your description is very similiar to RealBand's multi-riff feature. Unfortunately you are using the Mac operating system and RealBand is not available on the Mac.

I requested ++ RealBand for Mac HERE ++ and you supported the idea. There are several additional requests in the RealBand wishlist part of the forum so there seems to be support for a Mac version of RealBand.

One thing to be aware of also is that when you generate two tracks of the same Realtrack, BIAB Windows recognizes this and generates tracks that are complimentary with each other and they are always different from each other. This is designed into BIAB Windows according to Peter Gannon in a thread reply some time back.

I'm not sure if is the same with the Mac version at this time but it would be easy to generate several tracks of the same Realtrack to see if it also works in MAC BIAB.

You're right Charlie. The concept of complementary generations of tracks was introduced around four years ago (if I recall correctly, that is).

If two instances of the same realtrack are generated at the same time in BIAB, they will be different from one another for the entirety of the the tracks. This doesn't apply to tracks that are generated in different generations. While I don't know for sure, I imagine that this principle carries over into the Mac version.

Generally this works pretty well but I have had situations with acoustic guitar RealTracks where two tracks using the same RealTrack generated several bars with no differences. I noticed this because in my final mix, even though the two tracks were panned, at some points rather than panning they simply increased in volume centered and played identical parts. In those cases you can either regenerate or try shifting the two tracks a tiny bit (10-20ms).

Yes, this feature is called Same-but-Different

If you have 2 or more of the same Realtracks on different tracks, BiaB will automatically make them all different at all times.

Have Fun!

And the "Same-but-Different" concept was introduced into the Mac version in about 2011 onwards, just to clear that up.

Peter, I'm not talking about having 2 or more Realtracks on different tracks, I'm talking about different takes with the same track. Let's say I was to use 687: Harmonic,Background Pop Ev 165 (TJ Klay) track for a song I wanted to write. As of now, every time I wanted to generate that track to be played in BIAB, it would produce a different part. However, if I had the "Best of" option, when ever generated that track, up to three times, Band in a Box would save those takes. Then, in a little dialogue box,it to chose the take I find most appropriate. After selecting the one I wanted, BIAB would then create a .wav file within the season. This would allow me to know that that part would fit in with the song, and will be exactly what I hear when I go to render all the individual tracks to .wav files to mix later on.

Now, I understand that all of people here are every dependent on MIDI, having a meticulous itch for detail, but I really like the quail of the audio that the RTs bring.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
