I have this model and the speakers in it are terrible. They are worse than the speakers in my lap top. But I did buy iLuv iSP110 speakers at an All For Under $5 store for $4.99 and they are fantastic. I record BobH and myself when we sit and jam on my patio and use the iLuv for playback. I have also taken the SD card out and put some of our jams into my computer. https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=iluv+isp110&tag=mh0b-20&index=aps&hvadid=1470785469&hvqmt=p&hvbmt=bp&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_1bn99psz20_pOver all I think the Tascam DR05 is a very good buy for remote recording.
Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Thanks a lot Mario for the very quick reply. It does get good reviews on Amazon, and price seems right, so may well buy, not so much concerned about the clarity of the mono speaker as such (expect that) but want a little volume, not having to hold it up to ear.
Thanks again Musiclover

I have a SONY unit, very similar. You use these to make good field recordings. Any use of the built-in speaker is just to check you have the right file, or are cued up to the right place in the file, and fidelity is not great. More important, mine has both digital and analog outputs, and even two analog jacks (line out and headphone), to ensure good sound transfer.

Thanks again Musiclover You will not have to hold this up to your ear to hear it as it is loud enough to put an a table and still hear it.

Hi Musiclover! My honest recommendation has to be the zoom h4n. The microphones pick up very well, and give you the option to switch the degrees of the stereo pair and multiple inputs for a lot of different applications. One of the most versatile pieces of equipment i've used! - Feel free to check it out here: https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h4n-handy-recorder
Cheers, Joe

I agree. I love Zoom stuff. I have the Q3HD video recorder from way back. The condenser mics on it are lovely. The new H6 looks impressive and it can plug on to a digital camera. https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/h6-handy-recorder

Thanks Joe for that info. I had the Tascam ordered and it came today, seems ok for what I want it for mainly as a quick sketchpad of songs. Speaker is probably better than I expected. The Zoom does look very impressive, no doubt would have gone with that, but its 2.5 times the price compared to the Tascam. Ah well, can't have everything I want. Thanks again Musiclover

Even a marginally decent set of insert earphones will serve you better than an internal speaker
