So does this still apply? We seem to be skirting the rules here recently in all sorts of ways.

There are several covers in the showcase right now.... only one shows the proper permissions in the OP.
And if we're discussing something and someone provides a link to a song or a video ... is that also not a violation of the rules? Does the YouTube site provide the proper protections and license for people to repost links to their videos?

Technically, as soon as you write it, you have copyright. True that. Could be worded better; but the following "You must have all of the rights to the songs" makes it clearer. Funny thing is, one of the covers in question was just the subject of a recent huge plagiarism suit.  Regards, Bob

Technically, as soon as you write it, you have copyright. When you read the rules, as posted by PG.... it says you must have the rights to the song. If you wrote it and have not signed it to an exclusive publisher, obviously, you still have the rights to the song. And.... on the other hand, if you wrote it, and HAVE signed it to an exclusive publisher, you no longer own it and therefore have no legal right to use it publicly. I have a few like that. Can't legally use my own songs. They are trying to avoid copyright infringement issues with folks posting songs they do not have the rights to use publicly. My question goes to the cases where people have been posting copyrighted works without indicating they have the proper license to use it publicly. As I pointed out, several covers are in the showcase now without license proof. Shouldn't PG staff remove the post and warn the individual of the violation? If not.... why have that rule? And further.... in other parts of the forum, where people post links to YouTube videos that they like, or want to share a song from an artist, do not have the copyright for..... Soooooo.... does YouTube have a blanket copyright permission for people to copy, repost and use their videos, and be totally 100% within the copyright laws? If so.... there's a simple way around the whole PG prohibition against posting copyrighted materials here. You record your cover version, you post it to YouTube as a video, and you then simply post the link to the YouTube version of the cover in the PG Showcase, and waaa laaa, your six is covered. I'd love to see some of the PG (legal) staff weigh in on this.

On a peripherally related note around 25% of our posted songs over the last five years have been public domain songs. When we post a PD song we do a ton of research to make sure that the song is indeed in the PD per USA regs which are the strictest in the world. If you don't rip off another arrangement then you own and can copyright your arrangement and thus own all rights to the song.

Ok, given that I only play covers at the moment. Sadly, often very different from the originals, and have posted them occasionally, how should they be credited? Is there a standard format or do I just never post a cover? Do I stop posting on Youtube etc. On Streetjelly, I fill in a gig list and they sort out copyright issues. Just wondering. At a recent live Earth, Wind and Fire show in Hong Kong, the band encouraged the hundreds of people filming and photographing to carry on and post them to encourage more bums on seats at their next gigs. It is absolutely fine to play covers on streetjelly as long as you fill In your set lists. They sort out the royalties (at least that's what they tell us). I think what Herb is referring to here is posting covers to the user showcase forum. So, if you do load covers onto YouTube just don't post them to the user forum.
