I can't hear my midi thru channel in BIAB 2017 unless I hit play.

I'm using the coyote synth and ASIO ... The v/u meter moves when I I hit the keys on my snyth , but I don't hear any sound until i hit play and the program loads....then it plays fine....but I am stumped...

I have the same problem, I've been working on this since last week. I had a few exchanges with the tech support line, they said it worked on their keyboard. I tried uninstalling 2017 and reinstalling, no help. I've been doing this for years, so I don't think I'm doing anything obviously dumb, but I can't figure it out.

Clearly there is a glitch somewhere, because midi thru worked in BIAB 2016 with what appears to be the same settings I'm using in 2017....Tried installing the program onto my hard drive from the external, but no difference.
AS I said in the first post, the VU meter moves when I play notes on my keyboard, but you can't hear it until the program begins...

As a songwriter, (where I work out songs on my keyboard before plugging the chords in BIAB) I find it extremely frustrating to have to put all the other channels on mute, hit play in order to hear the midi thru....

I'm not a newbie...I've used BIAB since it first came out more than 25 years ago....but this is making me crazy! Someone at PG music help!!!!!!!!

I've never been able to monitor the midi track in stop, always had to put the transport in play, and from what I understand from some long time users it is not possible to hear the midi track when the transport is stopped. This is a serious short coming of BIAB. btw, it works just fine in realband.

It is my understanding the WDM driver is now always active in BIAB 2017, changed in response to that problem. It is possible that this change in 2017 has caused the change in behavior you are experiencing. I echo the suggestion to give Support a shout. When you solve it, please post that here so we can help others.

Always (since 2000. that I remember), I have been able to monitor midi thru when the program is open and not only when playing (something that is happening since updated to 2017) I used to enter the chords with my guitar (fishman triple play). I checked the settings, compare with real band midi setting and I nothing has changed. Mid thru work perfectly in real band (I also checked other DAW). A way around is to keep open Real band then you can hear your keyboard or midi guitar as a reference. I hope tech support will give and answer soon!

I've exchanged a few emails with support since last week on this issue, but haven't heard anything back on how to resolve it. I'll post as soon as I hear something.

From Tech support:

The Thru channel is used to hear playback when entering notes, using the Chord Builder, or playing in the Ear Training dialog.

For the Thru channel to be activated, you need to use the Microsoft GS Wavetable as your MIDI output device and have the CoyoteWT enabled as your DXi synth.
You also need to be using MME Audio drivers, as ASIO drivers won't work with the GSWavetable synth.

Please go to Options | MIDI Audio Driver Setup to make these selections.

Let us know if you already had all these settings or still don't get sound when entering notes after making these changes.

Thank you,
Alyssa

When I did this about 4 years ago, the latency was so long it was unusable, so I got instructions from support on how to change to using ASIO drivers instead of MME. I tried it again to confirm the problem- I would say this configuration is not usable because of the latency.

...............
Here is the last paragraph from the "what's new in 2017" blurb (also in the help file): "MME Output always on" option has been added. This allows you to use VST or Canyon GM DXi at all times, so MIDI can be routed and heard using these Plugins when the program is stopped.

Are these two statements mutually consistent? I don't think so - "all times" should mean all times. (And notice support doesn't even mention a hardware synth, which was the raison d'etre for Midi Thru in the original Midi spec.) Besides, in 2016, with "ASIO always on" enabled and the FocusRite ASIO driver, I was able to "play" the TTS-1 softsynth on the Thru channel without the transport engine running.

But that function has been flaky through the years. About time to clean it up IMHO. Latency is one thing - we've each gotta deal with that based on our hardware. Smooth functionality is something else...

EDIT - BTW what is "Canyon GM DXi"...?

So, those of you who have 2017, can you now monitor your midi input with the transport stopped? Probably a deal breaker for me. Thanks.

I searched but could not find a Canyon GM DXi. I suspect they meant Coyote (either the WT or Forte) and probably got tripped up by autocorrect.

If a Canyon and a Coyote are involved, there's probably a Roadrunner nearby ( grin )

I can only get it to work if I change from ASIO to MME, in which case the latency is so bad I'm not able to use it. I will probably drop back to the 2016 version if this can't be resolved.

Regarding ASIO.... unless I've missed it, no-one has indicated what ASIO driver s/he is using. Because of this, I suggest that the following is worth trying.

I rarely use ASIO but from what I read on these forums, not all ASIO drivers are equal.... some work better with BIAB than others.

With this in mind, try using ASIO4ALL (it's freeware) and see if it makes a difference. ASIO4ALL is recommended by PG Music as BIAB interacts well with this software.

I suggest the following set up.

Also, make sure that "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" is selected as the midi driver (#2 below). Even though the VSTi/DXi settings are active (#4 on the image below), selecting of the 'GS Wavetable Synth' can have an impact.

Regards,
Noel

I don't know if it will work, but that's a very good suggestion Noel just made. ASIO4ALL is not ASIO; it just simulates it and uses the WDM driver, which BIAB refers to as MME. Or at least that's the way I remember it the last time we discussed this several years ago.

The reason it might be a good solution is that version 2017 added the feature of MME always on, so we could play a keyboard when BIAB was loaded but stopped.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
