Just trying to use Additive Drums 1 instead of my hard synths drums to follow a midi drum track. Have a drum track setup in RB, midi channel 10. Have assign this track to Additive Drums VSTi and have selected a drum kit...plays fine but cannot control the volume with RB. The track volume slider has no effect on Additive Drums. Expression is set to 127. Have tried to insert volume nodes (CC7 and 11), but AD does not respond. Works fine with my hardsynth. Is there a way to do this? What am I missing here?

You'll need to consult AD documentation. It is likely not GM compatible and the normal CC numbers won't work.

I don't have that one.

Right Rharv, that's what I'm thinking too. Have spent hours with the manual, it can do lots of stuff there but no midi control that I can find. Seems that you can control individual drums within the app and control overall volume in the app but nothing seems to let you do this from RB.

I know a lot of folks here on the forum mentioned using Additive Drums so there must be some way to do it. Either that or they must be dragging the output into another DAW and controlling it there. Was hoping that I could use it as a straight VSTi within RB but maybe that isn't going to work.

Do appreciate you jumping in here, your advice is always appreciated.

Don't break your head over this. Just render the track to audio and everything works.

If you're experimenting with different drum styles, punches etc, you have 48 tracks in RB. Create as many as you need and for the purposes of editing use the AD interface to adjust the volume so you can hear it. Once you've got the midi editing done, render it to audio.

Another thing to consider with those 48 tracks. A great thing about midi drums is you can separate the entire kit to it's own track. Make sure you're using different midi channels for each track. Now you can render to audio the kick by itself, the cymbals by themselves, hihat, snare, etc, etc. Since they're on different channels you can insert different effects for every part of the kit. Run all of those individual drums to a Subgroup and mix to your hearts content.

Just for anyone following up on this in the future, here is the response back from XLN on Addictive Drums and volume control using MIDI:

Thank you for contacting us. I'm afraid that Addictive Drums doesn't respond to volume cc (or any other cc data), but you should be able to automate the track volume on the Addictive Drums software instrument track in your DAW.

Thanks for taking the time to post the manufacturer's response to your query. First it's nice to know they responded so fast but even more important to know Addictive Drums does not have any midi velocity control.

I have the basic EZD and used it for the first time on a project the other day and found out it doesn't respond to RB's volume changes. I used EZD's mixer to set an overall level I could work with then tweaked that track using the volume nodes.

I then decided it was time to resurrect Jamstix and guess what? It does respond to volume changes.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
