Cool behind-the-curtain look at that whole world. One commenter says that he only has two weeks every two years to get out of his BMI contract: "If your registered letter is not received during that window, they own you for another two years." Chilling stuff...

Really great of you to share this!

Now to answer your question, in general Pepsi for me...I'm ok with Coke, especially with a little Captain Morgan's in it wink

So.... I guess what it comes down to is who you ask.

While the writer of the story referenced, claims there can be "a radical difference" between 2 writers with different PRO's, however, that is generally not the case. (define radical difference) If that was common, you can bet someone would be looking into it and lawsuits would abound. There can also be other kinds of things in each writer's placement sheet that causes the difference. Figuring out some of the writers royalties is, I'm sure, an exercise in chaos theory calculations.

Both BMI and ASCAP pay about the same amount. Yes, they use different formulas to calculate your payments and that may introduce a difference between 2 writers on the same songs on the same usage schedule. I'd wager the differences are generally a small percentage at best.

http://diymusicbiz.com/ascap-or-bmi-which-one-is-best/

If there was a huge difference, you can best believe the word would be on the street and you would see hundreds of writers dumping the one that pays less to join the one that pays more, and that's not happening.

I have heard that one or the other is better depending on the kind of writing you do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKhX_e57sPg

I chose to go with BMI based on nothing in particular other than it was free to join as a writer. To me it was simply a coin toss decision as to which was better or would pay more. I had researched both and found nothing bad about either. It cost $50 to join ASCAP as a writer and BMI was free.

My royalty checks from BMI are fairly small but they come on a regular basis and they account for some placesments that earn as little as 5 cents for each usage (the short cues of a few seconds each).

Tried to read the article but when I clicked onto the link I got a "404" error.

Herb (Guitarhacker) said pretty much what my thoughts are. I saw no significant differences between BMI & ASCAP. If I thought I was going to expect substantial royalties (ah, to dream!), perhaps I would look a little closer. Until then, I'm happy with BMI. When a BMI royalty check comes in, I usually go on a splurge - I get the large hot fudge sundae rather than the medium. Life is good!

I also joined BMI because I figured it might take a few years to earn back the fee to join ASCAP!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
