About three years ago I was asked to bring back a sax solo I did in the late 50's while in high school. I was in a rock and roll band and recorded one song in particular that 50 years later was "discovered" by a Russian group. They were about to go into the studio to record the original song from the 50's and I was asked to play the solo once more for their recording. I of course said I would, because what else does a 70 year old retired music teacher have to do with his time. And through exchanged music files the project was completed and I in fact have a copy of the CD.
Whew, I guess you are wondering what all this has to do with this topic.
Well it's this, I am glad to see that the new recording is NOT on this top 10 list.
It is because the style is called Punk-a-Billy which in case you can't figure out is a combination of punk and Rock-a-Billy.

I listened for the first few minutes yesterday and had never heard of the genres he is talking about. "Crunk"?? "Emo"? And the one that he gave an example of some song that everyone on the planet heard unless they had been living in a cave, or something like that I don't remember exactly how he worded it, I had never heard the song :P
I'm out of the loop I guess, but I'm ok with that.

I'm was sorry to see Crunk go away. It was very deep.

Hair Metal is dead? Man that was some pretty cool stuff.... still is. Everybody wanted to be in a hair band and wear those skin tight jump suits..... meanwhile, I was in a country band working steady wearing embroidered shirts, bluejeans and a cowboy hat.

They missed a bunch of genre's thankfully, long gone and forgotten by most. I was really expecting to see Bubblegum Pop on that list....

Hair metal, what a weird thing that was/is. It's a shame in some respects that these folks felt they had to dress up that much. One of the strangest trends then was the Christian themed hair metal bands. Stryper is probably the best known of that thin slice niche, and they were all quite good musicians. They have recently done an album of mostly cover material and touring those songs, sans Lycra, and they do a live cover of Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son that is top notch.

Now that's funny and reminds me of the time I went to see a buddy of mine with his new band. We had played together in a country rock band and when that broke up, he ended up joining a disco/dance band. He was on stage in a tight...really tight jump suit. Now, keep in mind that he was a "big boy".... think Larry the Cable guy kind of "big boy"..... up there jumping around playing disco hits. Oh heck yeah, Play that funky music white boy.

Just try to imagine buying a big watermelon and putting it into one of those plastic shopping bags. Then take that bag and put your arms through the handle holes and let it hang in front of you. That's pretty much the best description ever.

I suppose it depends on the impact you're looking to have - I bet if you put one on now and post a few pics, you definitely would get a lot of hits on Facebook or Youtube ; )

The search string would be "Don't let this happen to you".

This is all generational. So vinyl sounds better because the music WAS better? Ok, what do you guys think about the Roaring 20's stuff? The Charleston, flappers, rag time and all that? Was that music better? Of course it was to all the folks partying at illegal Speakeasy's. I vaguely remember my grandfather talking about that scene in Detroit and my grandmother had a dance studio at that same time. She didn't like the WWII big band swing era. Too "modern".

Tastes are developed between the ages of about 15-25 and sticks with us for the rest of our lives. And God forbid ANY teenager would love his parents music...

Bob that line is meant as a joke. Some of the music and musicians are better today as they were back then. A progressive musician learns from what has come before him or her and builds on that knowledge. Of course many are not as good but that was the same as in the 2000's, 90's, 80's all the way down to when music was recorded.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

The issue that I see is this. (And this is slightly tangent.) Bands that we all knew back in older days stayed together 8, 10, 12 years or longer. That gives them time to develop a style, both writing and performing.

Now though, bands make so much money that after 2 albums they are all rich and can go off and do their own thing. Bands now that are together and perform a lot all year long for 3 years are considered veteran bands, and that continuity and growth is gone. Also, the technology is so much better that musicians, while they probably CAN play well, don't HAVE to play well. Tasteful guitar has largely been replaced by the "how many notes can I fit into my 16 bar solo" mentality. Keyboards are sequenced, drummers playing with click so the drums can be augmented with sampled drums. Different game from back when most of us had dark hair. Or, hair, as the case may be.

I actually still listen to some of the genres in that video, picking up the CDs at the local Goodwill stores for 1$ each. I have the Mighty Mighty Bosstones CD with the featured song that I picked up maybe a year ago. Still a fun listen. Made horns cool again for a few years for the kids.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
