I am currently using SampleTank 3 as my standalone synth in my Mac. I was able to set it up correctly in terms of playback. The instrument that I set is what I hear during playback. However, when I render the song to audio, it still uses the built-in sound.

What have I missed in the setting?

I also tried using SampleTank 2 but the result is still the same.

Some additional info; my macOS version is Sierra 10.12.4 and my BIAB version is mac 2016.

Hoping to get help soon.

So I tried using SampleTank 2 again. This time, I was able to make it work by setting it as a VST plugin. Whatever patch I define here is what will be save in the audio that I render (i.e., either M4A or AIFF). I need to run SampleTank 2 also at the same time so I can hear what it sounds like when I playback the song in BIAB.

I'm just wondering why was this mentioned in the video tutorial of PG Music? Is what I did just some sort of workaround?

I tried doing the same thing again, but this time using SampleTank 3 but BIAB did not accept it because it is a 64-bit plugin. I got frustrated again but after reading some topics in the site, I saw jBridgeM and gave it a try. Now, I consider my problem solved. But still, I'm thinking if defining the synth as a plugin a workaround or is that what it should be? I still haven't got a concrete answer from the support team. I hope there is a better solution.

Hello Froi,

Are you using the IAC Driver to route the sound to SampleTank? I don't think what you want to do is possible, since you would somehow have to record the output from SampleTank back into Band-in-a-Box. Using the VST plugin is the best approach here I think... Which video tutorial were you referring to?

Hi Andrew,

Yes, I'm using the IAC driver for both SampleTank 2 and 3. Though I also tried the BIAB Virtual Output for the latter.

The video I was referring to is "Using Band-in-a-Box Mac with Standalone Synths".

Is there a way that I just use the VST plugin but still here the MIDI sound when I playback the song in BIAB? Right now, I still need to run SampleTank so I get hear the MIDI sound during playback.

We should update those tutorials, since they were probably written before plugin support was available.

The plugin version of SampleTank should work pretty much the same way. In other words you will need to assign the instruments to the appropriate channels in the SampleTank interface.

To use the plugin version:

1. Go to Options | MIDI Settings | Select MIDI Driver, and make sure you have Apple DLS synth selected.
2. Click the Plugins button and select 'Plugins Dialog' (or use the Plugins tab of the Mixer).
3. On the left, choose the track of interest, or click Default Synth to set it for all tracks.
4. Click the top drop-down box on the right and choose SampleTank - if it doesn't appear there, click Add Plugins... You should see the SampleTank plugin now, and it should look and work like the stand-alone version.

Yehey!!!! This is what I want; only one occurrence of SampleTank and it covers both playback and rendering. Now it also has lesser RAM usage that can be allotted to other stuff.

Thanks Andrew!!! smile

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
