Solo is missing, but doable, mute is actually there it just is not called mute, record is handled differently instead of arming a track, like Sonar or Cubase you highlight it and then hit record.

So I understand what you want, you want RB to function like all other programs out there, "Industry Standard" as you call it. Cool I guess I would be fine with that addition, although that means that the other side of it will not be the same. No longer can you cancel soloed track with out clicking each one of them. So you save a step on one end, and add one on the other. I would have to mull that over a while to see if it is a net gain.

One think to think about, there is a lot about RB, and PTPA for that matter that is not Industry standard. If it was would it be unique.

There are a few upgrade that most of us feel are needed, like finally adding a true node based automation feature, rather than the drag in piano roll, or fader record like it has now.

Oh and the picture you used for illustration, well many folks drive an automatic transmission, so your industry standard might not be someone elses. Just sayin'

thanks john i only asked as im having problems getting the volumes to stay i`m using garritans aria and its very hard to keep the volumes at a level they seem to drift when you shut down the mixer on the Aria which you use first to set the volumes on the tracks you use the big band and jazzband instruments on,so you can never get the tracks volumes to stay ok over all and the main mixer seems a bit useless overall

regards Dave

Dave, you have a confusing way of writing but if I'm understanding you correctly, your problem with individual track volumes can be related to your midi file itself. There have been tons of posts about that problem especially with midi files you download from the internet. Check your event list (hit F2 per track) to see if there's any embedded CC7 volume controllers. If there are then that's your problem. You can change the sliders all you want but as soon as you hit play again, RB is reading that embedded volume and changes it back. You need to either be aware of that and work around it or delete those and create new ones. If you delete all embedded CC7's then your mixer moves and volume sliders will stick. The reason I say you may want to keep those and work around it is because some midi's I've downloaded are actually very good and the person wrote in some good dynamics into the file. Once I realized what's happening I also realized I didn't want to delete all those because I like having some dynamics in most tunes. Other midi's, those CC7's are not for dymanics, they're just for the overall track to track mix and the mix in the file doesn't work with the synth I'm using so those I will either change or delete.

This situation is why people shouldn't lump Real Band with Biab. They're totally different programs. RB is a audio/midi sequencer and it's designed for this kind of detailed work with midi files, Biab is not. Plopping Biab's mixer into RB would do nothing with embedded CC7's in a midi file.

Jford had a good point, about not being able to select certain tracks from the chords view, you could select a range of bars, but it played all tracks. But last i check no other DAW had a Chords view, so really that is not a deficency really. That view is not for soloing and testing parts of track per se.

Is not the mute button the same as a reverse solo?

Could you not open the chords view above the mixer view and highlight a range or bars and mute the tracks you do not want to hear, and leave the others "live"?

Seems like a decent workaround for now.

I remember a discussion a few years back on another forum board regarding the difference between mute ansd solo. Seems that they do exactly the same thing only backwards.

I also remember Rharv telling me once that all the tools are there, they are just a tad different from usual. Kind of the OP's point i think.

Workflow is important though; more so to some than others. I happen to find RB (and PT)intuitive, but I cut my teeth with them. I find Audition to be very cumbersome. Reaper I can deal with, but still not 'comfortable'. TBH this whole idea should be in the wishlist forum where Peter and Jeff may see it better. I wouldn't mind seeing it as an added feature. May not use it much but others may. If it makes the program better for some (without causing problems) why not? I still want a single click to the mastering FX section (A1 FX) with one click ... so I just keep asking.

I may the only one asking though. They could call it the rharv version! (and blame me if people don't like it).

Musocity,

Many thanks for the suggestions, and the screenshots. I agree with that idea, of the M S R buttons, hopefully it is something we can add.

Have Fun!

There's all kinds of room on that tracks window to function as both. Shame that you have to flip/stack/arrange, just to do a simple task like mutes/solos/etc.

In that huge circle on the left in each track showing a depiction of a waveform - there's where you put them.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
