to all BIAB users who use it mainly as a wonderful practice tool,

I posted this in the "Wishlist" post as well, but think this is something that should be addressed in a new build in the existing version:
------------------------------------------------
It has been a while since I upgraded, but noticing while it is nice to have the spacebar stopping and starting playback (as opposed to older "x" for start and "escape" for stop) and 2 options for the way it works within preferences in the latest version of BIAB, a most basic functionality is no longer available.

For the sake of not having to use one's mouse to fuss with playback - it is no longer possible with BIAB 2016 to select (click) a bar number and and have the music ALWAYS start at that quickly highlighted bar when hitting the space bar. The only options available in Preferences: it either a) starts only from the beginning, or b) plays from the current bar where the music STOPS.

the older versions of BIAB, one could quickly click on any given bar, press "X" and no matter how far into that passage or further into the song one played, when stopping the music, when pressing "X" again, the music would always start from the bar that you originally clicked on. Surely, I am not the only practicing this way?!

It is simply no longer possible to do this on BIAB 2016, short of double clicking on the same bar with one's mouse or track pad - which is a pain when one wants to be focussed on learning to play any given number of bars of music repeatedly from the same spot no matter where you tell the music to stop playback. Ie, key commands are where it is at, and the simplicity of just hitting the space bar only ONCE from the selected bar (so it always started from THAT BAR and does not recommence playback at the current bar where playback was stopped, or from the beginning) is surely a useful way to practice for many people using BIAB. Even if one has to hit a different key to stop playback, this basic functionality would be an asset if it were to return to BIAB 2016.

Could this not be added to preferences as third option of playback functions in a new build for BIAB 2016 for Mac, but of course specifically with the space bar if possible?

sincerely, Carlos

Hi Andrew,

Are you one of the developers..? Do you think this would be possible to add on this function I mentioned with a newer build of BIAB 2016 and not have to wait for BIAB 2017 or 2018..? :-)

best regards, Carlos

Hi Journeyman,

Yes, if you have chosen in Preferences "Plays from current position", it will do as you say - only once. Then, you have to manually click on that same bar again and hit the space bar. This simply gets in the way of effecient music practice.

Ideally, if there was a third option for playback offered in the Preferences, once clicking on a bar, e.g., lets' say bar 9, then ideally it would always start from bar 9 by just hitting the spacebar, without having to also re-select bar 9 each time.

Please read again carefully what I already posted and am suggesting for re-gained functionality which no longer exists in BIAB 2016.

regards, Carlos

Thanks for your post Carlos, this is definitely a significant problem. I would imagine that all BB users use "play from any bar" constantly.

In my case (Win 7 PC, BBVersion 2016 (438), I'm up to date)
it is clearly a glitch. When I hit the space bar at any bar it plays the first chord of the bar and sustains it until I hit escape. So, if I want to hear a section, I'm forced to play from the beginning through that section.

The help file says - "You can double click on any bar to start playback at that location. There is also an option in the Preferences dialog to start and stop playback with the SPACEBAR. The spacebar or double click can be used on an ending bar (or a bar in the tag), and it will play from the ending (or tag).

That option is in the Preferences main window and I do have it selected.

PG Music, this really is an important function.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
