I want to make an MP3 from a finished track. I looked in the Real Band Help index for MP3 and didn't see anything.

I found the Export button. It says an entire track can be exported to MP3. I clicked it but it said I didn't highlight a track section. I want the entire song.

So what is the easiest way to make an MP3 of a finished Real Band project?

Thanks.

An entire track means a single track.
I think maybe you want 'Render - Merge Audio and DXi/VSTi tracks to compressed file'.
This allows ixing all tracks to a compressed format.

Compressed is the key word here;
RB will ask where to merge the wav file to first, which seems confusing, but right after that it will ask for a compressed format to convert the mixed down wav file to .. and your choices include only formats the OS can use.

Once complete you have a 'compressed' file in the desired format, but I I notice 2 things:

The wav file gets created (but is 0 kb in size so it should get removed) and the compressed file is then created.

The 2nd thing is you have to have an MP3 codec installed to Windows or your best option is 56k, which is not good.
K-Lite is an often suggested solution for a codec to allow Windows to do the conversion, but be careful where you download it from, and watch for all Options along the way that may want to add other crap with it.
Be careful (as always) when installing stuff to your operating system.

If your 'track' is already mixed down to a wav file, I'd suggest getting 'LAME Front End' or configuring Audacity for LAME. It has a lot of options and is fast/efficient. Depends if you are wanting to do this in RB, or could easily use a third party app.

2bSolo - I render the file as a .wav file and use a different program to edit the file and create MP3's.

Wavepad is the one I use http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

(The free version of Wavepad is for non-commercial use only)

In RealBand select 'Render/Merge Audio and VSTi/DXi tracks to stereo wave file'

I open the .wav file with Wavepad and do some editing such as eliminate the count in and fade out the ending on most songs. Also amplify or compress the song as needed. I then save it as an MP3. Works great for me!

Thanks for the replies. This sounds really complex. I think I will just mix it to a CD and then rip it from the CD.

Maybe this is something for the wishlist.

Thanks again.

it just works well.

OK, I decided I would try to use Wavepad. I downloaded it and it looks very handy.

Then I opened my file in Real Band and tried to render it. Uncooperative. It crashed twice. I started it again and tried again. Now it is asking for the WAV file I want to render and it won't give me any option to use another file.

The song I want to render is .SEQ.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Thanks.

Let it render to wav first, then RB will ask for the conversion you want (mp3, wma, whatever) afterwards.

Just go along, and it will likely work.

I've complained about this before, but RB needs to render to wav first, then it will ask what you want to convert it to.

Thanks for the tip, rharv. That would be OK if it would do that. Problem is, it won't do anything. Guess I will have to try to reach Tech Support.

I did get Wavepad but I had trouble getting the project into it.
There is another NCH program called SoundTap. After some experimenting with volume on my computer, that got me a file that Wavepad could use.

Thanks folks. 2b

Since the Fraunhofer codec is not patent protected anymore (as I understand it, and there was a write-up about it at the Cakewalk site), you might want to take a look here (assuming you are brave enough to mess with your registry):

Enabling Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (Professional) in Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista and Windows Server 2016 down to 2008

An update that might help someone else.

I called PG Tech Support and reached Kent. We tried several things but nothing worked. During the conversation, Kent asked me to look for volume nodes in empty tracks. There weren't any but that got me thinking later in the day.

I noticed I was getting an error message early in the rendering process. My project has the first 8 tracks reserved for midi tracks, even though I am not using any. So I removed all those empty midi tracks. I also removed any empty tracks between tracks with audio. Then I tried rendering. Voila!

One other thing: I had to turn the RB master volume down or I ended up with distortion on the WAV file.

So now I have a WAV file to take to Wavepad.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions and to Kent for the effort to figure it out.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
