Ha....

A Happy Anniversary to Cakewalk!
I'm very glad they've fared well over the decades given all the very stiff competition that entered that arena.

Those screen shots sure bring back memories.

Like many here, I began my software recording journey with Cakewalk/12 Tone Systems in summer of 1994 with Cakewalk 3.0.
I've always been pleased with that choice and would never defect.

Before Cakewalk....it was Voyetra....with all the cute little magenta colored midi measure boxes. smile

A good day to all....

I remember Voyetra too. My first serious computer recording was Cakewalk Pro Audio, the forerunner of the SONAR line.

I think quite a few here are SONAR users.

I started with Dr. T's sequencer for the Atari. Then it was onto Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and finally Sonar Platinum.

My how things have changed since I started recording!

I started with version 2 of CW for DOS to my recollection V2 for DOS looked exactly like the pictured V1 for MS-DOS grin !

I stayed with CW (then Sonar) for EVERY version, up to and including the current Sonar Platinum (Lifetime), although I've almost always had additional sequencers & DAW's over the years.

But last fall I weened off Sonar completely and moved on (jumped into Lifetime about seven months too soon). I'm still playing with a few different DAW's so may bounce back and forth for a while.

I didn't and don't like where CW as a company or product is headed (Steinberg like attitude, support, inflexible installs and required OS settings [that's strictly a Cubase thing not, as of yet, a Sonar thing], and in Sonars case just the evermore messy installs and redundant files placed all over drive(s), and other tech crap that just simply hacks me off - that is hidden from or not affecting the "default install options" user base.

The final Sonar straw occurred last Jul/Aug update and I walked away in Oct - after almost 30 years.

Oh well everything comes to an end

You're right about installing all the files on the C drive, and that's just uncalled for.

There is good news, though: the Support division is showing new signs of life as of this last build.

I haven't had your experience but I stopped the upgrades process when they went to the so-called "lifetime" thing and I just wasn't interested in this new paradigm.
Not that it's bad for CW or the end customer but it seems to be getting too involved/complicated from my perspective.
I'm still not what one would call a power user so Sonar X3 will work for me until I return to stardust.
I haven't been to the forums for a long time.

A good day to all....

The C drive thing is true if you use the Command Center but if you update off-line you can install everything where you want them installed.

Personally I don't mind them installing on my C drive but I will agree that one should have install options available in the Command Center.

While not perfect, there is a checkbox in Command Center to do a verbose install, which gives you more options for where to put stuff. However, in Cakewalk's case, once installed, it's going to grey out a number items to install them where it went previously. The only recourse is to uninstall (and that may mean uninstalling a lot of stuff) and then re-installing fresh to designate where you want the various elements.

And yes, it will still put some stuff on your C: drive (which you won't want there).

I just built a new desktop and will be installing Sonar sometime next week (I'm going out of town this weekend, so can't do it then).

If I have the time, I may just do a system image, then do a Command Center initial install (without the verbose install setting), then redo it manually and see the difference. Or I may get lazy. smile

I started with Cakewalk in 1987 with hacked copy to run on my Commodore 64 with the little plug-in interface cartridge that went into the back of that tank of a computer. Such a bare bones DAW then. Then I tried Roger Powell's Texture that I got from a music store going out of business for $29, but by then I had a real DOS based PC, though he originally coded it for Mac. That had to be 1987-ish. Back then though I didn't know much and just used it like a glorified computerized tape recorder. I used MIDI very little, as it was fairly new and I was just learning like everybody else.

Now we have unlimited track studios in our spare bedrooms.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Mario

I've mentioned this before and elsewhere but I have NEVER used the CCC (just more hand-holding and overhead crap I don't want, need, or like)

That aside, and not to start anything, I assume you've applied at least ONE Sonar update since last Jul/Aug?

If so next time you download and manually run ("off-line") the next monthly update (again sans CCC) TRY and CHANGE where ANY PART of it is installed (the basic program update itself - thus moving where Sonar is; or updated plugins, or the local document, or...)

It's all greyed out now. It installs EVERYTHING (manually off line or with CCC) to the LAST PLACE you had CW install "stuff" before last Jul (Jul 2016)!

If you want to change where things are placed or installed you can:

a) Uninstall sonar and start over (and anyone who has ever done that – knows what a mess that is. Sonar uninstall, uninstalls EVERYTHING from all the older Sonar versions (8.5, 8, 7, 6,....) know matter where that stuff is installed (actually it cleans out registry and may or may not delete other sonar folders), as well as the most recent Sonar – the one you want to uninstall. This includes all "shared" (MIDI, DXi, VSTi, etc.) folders, and programs, and plugs – and really wreaks havoc on the registry for all CW “stuff.”

b) Do like me, and start hacking registry, manually moving stuff, use alias's for paths, etc. I just got tired of doing that.

c) OR DO nothing, which I fully understand is the 99.+ percentile of users – that’s fine - if you like where CW installs, or you installed everything before last Jul's update, and are happy, then GREAT!

Yes I know it's just a monthly patch update, and very few folks want to change where stuff is installed when doing a maintenance or “upgrade” PATCH but - one use to be able to do exactly that.

and yes to most users this is a “nothing burger.” But I've tried to keep 100% of ALL DAW and other non-work crap off my C:\ drive for numerous reasons (has nothing to do with space - I have PLEANTY)

BTW - anyone who as Sonar "installed" on a DRIVE other than C (like I ALWAYS HAVE done) - do a comprehensive search on your C:\ drive for ALL Cakewalk & Sonar folders (may as well look for folders like studio instruments, Dim Pro, etc. while you are at it) even if you think it's installed on anther drive

Now compare total amount of “sonar space” used on C:\ vice Sonar space used Drive X:\

it's been getting worse and worse since around Sonar V6 or 7 (due to the FALSE belief by CW that started with Vista that everything HAD to be installed in the C:\program files; C:\programs data, and various C:\User folders.

This issue with CW has slowly hacked me off to point that when the CW staff blew me off last Aug/Sep rather dismissively in the forums, yes it WAS staff not forumites, I finally had had enough and walked away. This was the straw but I’ve had a few others over years that they ALSO ignored. Actually since around the same Sonar V6 or V7 time the hair on back of my neck has been up with product, maintenance, and frankly “attitude.”

But that's just me.

Larry

Larry, no problem here and you didn't start anything. I mentioned that information as some people didn't know about it.

I am sure that you are correct in moving Sonar to a different drive is one big PITA.

I use the CCC as I do not mind Sonar on my C drive however my computer is off-line except for these updates and all this computer is used for is my music and photography programs. Nothing else is on this computer.

I don't know about versions 6 to 8.5 as I had to go from 5 to X1 because Sonar 5 would not install on my then new 64 bit Win 10 Pro.

If I was in your shoes I would be totally p#ssed off also.

Peace

You can move the stuff, but it's a manual process and you have to know what's what and you have to reset the folders from within Sonar and there is one element you have to do via a registry change. So yes, a PITA.

It was quite the change for this old bird.
Went to X1 Producer....then to X3 Producer and stopped there.

Larry....
Sorry to hear of your BS with the Cakewalk folks but your explanation seems to justify your assessment.

My former band member (bass player) and friend of 43 years is arriving here about 13:00 today from Kansas.
You got it...putzing with BIAB and Sonar is on the agenda.

Back to topic....a good weekend to all.

Wow! 30 years!

I didn't start at ground zero, but my first DAW was Cakewalk (3.0?) not sure of the version, but it was still all MIDI at the time. I've upgraded intermittently through the years. I have to admit to a love-hate relationship with it. When I talk about software that forces my creative hemisphere out of focus so I can address the technical requirements of making music on a computer.. I acquired that opinion from Cakewalk. It's better than that now, but the memories remain.

In a way, I owe my appreciation for PGMusic products to Cakewalk... because it was all those years of saying "there HAS to be a more intuitive way to get my ideas recorded" that led to my "AHA!" moment when a work friend introduced me to BIAB in the 90s.

This thread has me wondering how old BIAB is on 2017....

Well, the "About" link on the PGMusic web page says:

Quote:
Founded in 1988 by program creator Dr. Peter Gannon, PG Music has grown to have an international standing. A finalist in the prestigious PC Magazine "Award for Technical Excellence" in 1990 for Band-in-a-Box, and a 1995 Editors Choice Award recipient from Electronic Musician, PG Music now boasts a product line of over 30 distinct products.

So that tells me PGMusic is just one year behind Cakewalk.

the idea of a "30 YEARS of BIAB" get together is pretty good, Matt! It will be interesting to see if anybody else thinks so.

Regarding my efforts this year: it would have been great if a ton of people showed up, but I'm not at all disappointed that this meeting will be made up of me, you and Mario. I think the conversation in small groups tends to be more focused and interesting.

And I so wanted to come to this year's gathering, but my surgery just used up all my accrued leave. I barely accrued the couple of days to go to my niece's wedding this past weekend and even then, I'm a few hours in the hole. Oh, well.

Canada might be a fun trip, though.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
