I must admit I've never used them - most of my stuff is midi backing and audio vocals - three vocal tracks at most so my PC doesn't stutter if I load fx on each vocal channel individually. now i'm going to be recording stuff with a friend and we will have many more audio tracks - he's an ex-session keyboard player so he'll play lots of the tracks in as audio recordings as well as us recording harmony vocals.

So the PC might get a bit stretched. Years ago when I was using an actual mixing desk aux 1 was prefade for a monitor mix and aux 2 was post fade for fx. I now have 4 aux busses per channel to choose from and 8 aux busses on the right of the mixer with send and return controls.

so..............if i want all my vocals to share the same group of fx how do I do it? I know I can load a group in the aux buss on the right. If I turn the aux 1 knob on a vocal tracks fully to the right does it send 100% of the vocal tracks to aux 1 where the fx group is loaded as a post fade signal (I will have balanced the vocal tracks levels already to get the vocal mix I want)? So if I use the aux 1 send control to send 100% of the signals of the incoming vocal tracks to the fx and return to 100% I assume that the the whole track signals go to aux 1, then 100% to the fx and then return to the tracks with 100% of the fx. Am I right? The track will be 100% fx'd not a mix of fx and non-fx sounds?

That way one set of fx is all I use not a set per track. Advice would be appreciated.

In my experience the signal path is such that the individual track FX get processed first, then that is sent to the AUXs, then the AUX goes to the main outs. BUT the individual track is still also sent to the main out.

Typical use here (for vocals) is to use an individual compressor on each vocal track (if needed) to balance them, then send that to a shared reverb.

The individual track will still go to the main outs, and how much reverb they get is controlled by the AUX send and the VST itself. When using a reverb in AUX I always set it to 100% wet (since the dry signal gets to the main out from the track directly).

Hope that helps.
It can get confusing, but think of it as the AUX gets added to the individual track(s). The AUX send controls how much gets added.
Using a combination of the main volume control for the track and the AUX send dial in the mixer allows the flexibility to combine the result before it gets to the main outs.

so I can't send the entire signal to aux 1 for a total process including compression, eq and reverb? I want all my vocals with the same settings and therefore for compression and eq I need to process each track idividually?

seems like reverb is the only fx I can usefully add using aux 1

Maybe I'm getting confused between a process and an effect (trying to remember back a long time!). Processes such as compression and eq always come first then effects are applied to the compressed and eq'd signal. Processes I think are applied on a hardware mixer at an insert point and the aux busses on PT are not insert points - that is the role of the track fx. I think...............

You can indeed use one EQ/Compressor/Reverb set in the AUX send for all vocal tracks.

In my experience this usually doesn't work as well, but you can certainly do it and try it..

Hi Bob (Calver)

You could try this:

Route each of the vocal tracks to a sub-group.

Use the channel faders to balance out the vocal track volumes and use an Aux to add whatever effects you want. Then route the Aux effects buss to the same sub-group.

Now the vocal mix, including the effects, can be controlled with one sub-group fader. If you want to add compression to the whole vocal mix, incuding the effects, patch in a compressor to the sub-group FX.

Just make sure you have sub-groups activated in Prefs.

I do this all the time and it works fine. Hope it helps.

ROG.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
