Hi

Can anyone tell me if I can route/run biab for midi to different midi hardware modules and how I would connect them.

Like drums on one module piano on another. etc

I'll give a first guess that you can do it by chaining the equipment. Most MIDI devices have a MIDI Thru, so connect the source to MIDI In on the first device, then MIDI Thru to the next device. The drum machine should in theory respond only to signals on MIDI Channel 10. Look for a way to mute Channel 10 on the other device.

If your question is, can BIAB specify two different MIDI output devices, the answer is, to my knowledge, No.

Matt

Thanks, midi thru is one way I was thinking like a daisy chain.

I honestly thought there might be a hardware device that would be available for this, but just me thinking I suppose.

Matt is correct on one part I’ll expound just a little

Some MIDI HW went CHEAP (sorry no other way to say it) and only offer a MIDI OUT labeled OUT/THRU - with no dedicated MIDI THRU plug. The OUT in these cases USUALLY merge the OUT and THRU functions – or can be set to be one or the other or both via editing the internal HW settings.

But beware of latency if you start chaining too many synths (usually 3 to 5 milliseconds – per HW input to output connection) If more than three’ish modules in the chain probably time to think about a MIDI patch bay (it acts like an audio patch bay or audio mixer or both – depending on model)

ON PART TWO

Matt may be unaware of this but YOU CAN route to different MIDI HW if you have multiple MIDI PORTS on your PC using the free MIDIox (works in both WIN 7 and WIN 10 I use it sometimes for internal screwball stuff) see explanation

http://bandinabox.wikia.com/wiki/Accessing_Multiple_Midi_Ports

and here is link

http://www.midiox.com/?http://www.midiox.com/moxdown.htm

another free app called MidiRedirector, which was written by a BIAB user, allows you to route to both an external HW item and an internal plugin

http://bandinabox.wikia.com/wiki/VSTi_MidiRedirector_v_1.xx

this Wiki site has other useful if new to BIAB

Good Luck
Larry

Check your PM

I'm having trouble also with site download for that file

while you wait make sure you read about ASIO and latency and this .dll also not you MIGHT want to get a copy of the free LoopBe1, that he talks about

http://www.nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html

Finally, I, and I think most folks here, would recommend using the NATIVE ASIO driver for you audio card or device over ASIO4ALL (another free app) that is discussed (I won't; link to it - if you need it later its easy to find)

Beatmaster, the previous remarks tell you about work arounds. But IMHO the absolute best way to accomplish this is with a DAW like RealBand, Sonar, etc. I know that in Sonar I can add as many hardware synths as my system will allow while at the same time using softsynths. I believe RealBand can do the same thing with its 48 tracks. If you plug each synth into an USB port or use a MIDI hub each synth will be independent of the other synths and each synth will have MIDI channels 1-16 available.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Even more and better solutions from MarioD!

He is also correct, RB supports multiple HW AND SW ports (while as you know BIAB does not) without resorting to "trickery" assuming you have more than one PC MIDI HW port? (I should have thought of that free solution - Mario's mind is not befuddled with scotch, like mine)

You should have RB? RB came with BIAB, unless your version of BIAB is REALLY old (like me)

Yes, I would have done this in SONAR. I have experimented a long time ago with MIDIOx but decided that, with a DAW, it wasn't worth the effort to learn.

I was only addressing the question that was asked, if it can be done in BIAB.

Larry, good observation. YES. Music always comes before technology. laugh

Beatmaster, that's probably the most productive way to solve your question.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
