I have been watching videos about mastering, eq and compression. One of the ideas I have seen is parallel compression. The idea is to copy a track, compress the copy and then blend it with the original track. Evidently, this is a popular technique.

I have read posts on this forum that talk about the disadvantages of copying a track, processing it and blending it. The big issue was phase (did I get that right?). In the videos I saw, this problem was acknowledged. The video said the way to fix that is to align the tracks and many DAWs have a command to do that.

Does RB have a command for that? If so, can you guide me to it?

Thanks.

With Compression this is less likely to happen than with a time based plugin .. but

I always do the below when I suspect timing issues.

1.Set your Resolution to the highest possible (this allows more accurate editing).
In RB it is Options-Resolution, and using the highest setting has never caused an issue in my experience (3840)

2. Mark a section of the original track and use the audio editor to zoom in at the start point of the selection and note where the selected region starts on the original track, looking at the waveform. Where the waveform crosses the very first part of the highlighted section is what you want to note.

3. Exit audio editor and select the other track, being careful not to change the selected area (click on the track number area in the Tracks view, not the waveform area or such that could change the selected region).

4. Note the start point again; is it at the exact point in the waveform as the original? If not hold CTRL and the left mouse button and slide it over to match (after selecting the whole track).

This will usually offer a quick way to line up phase issues close enough to go un-noticed.
But, like I said, compression usually won't cause a timing issue. At least not here.

Hope it works OK (or you get the gist of it).

RB can do most of what other DAWs ca do, but how you do it is often different. I started out with Powertracks, so the other DAWs seem 'different' to me.

Side Note: I'll likely not be on here much in the foreseeable future; my daughter had an accident yesterday and broke her leg and her back, so I'll have other priorities. If you need more help with this, be patient. Others will chime in, and I will try to check in occasionally.

There are also plugins that allow shifting things for phase issues ..

Various tools have helped here when needed, even PhaseBug
http://www.pcjv.de/vst-plugins/betabugs-plugins/
One of the simplest but can be effective.

rharv, it was very nice of you to take the time to reply considering what you have going on. I hope things go well. Remember to take care of yourself so you can take care of her.

Therein lies the true challenge.
Thanks.
I will take care of me (or my wife will make me do so) .. which is why I wanted to mention the 'off the top of head' stuff.
TBH, right now posting here may be therapeutic .. but I doubt I'd win that argument with her. <grin>

/she's not here right now so I think I'm safe

If anyone is interested/concerned; she's home now.
Broken back and ankle, so it'll be a long summer (especially for her) and thanks for your concern.
It's appreciated.
Been a week now since the accident and the new 'normal' is starting to develop and settle in. We'll be fine.

/Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but didn't want to be rude again and not acknowledge people's concern/prayers after doing so already.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
