Looking for help. I have a nice little folk tune I have put together in BIAB. But I need lyrics to go with the tune. I have a deadline of end of this month. How hard can that be? I have my paper and pencil that I am carrying. But is there a computer aid that I should be using to help me with the process? I did a google search and can came upon TuneSmith and downloading free version now. But is there something else that you folks recommend? Found this older thread here. http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=406388&site_id=1

Dan,
If you have the tune happening, what I'd do is as follows.
1. Find a concept that I'd like to use as the song's story line.
2. Write out that story in essay style (around 160 - 200 words).
3. Take the above prose and divide the ideas into the sections of your song. For example: Verse 1 ideas, Verse 2 ideas, Bridge ideas.
4. Map the themes of these sections against the melodies that you've written. (This is probably the hardest part of all since it requires thinking of language in terms of a jigsaw puzzle and getting the right words to do the right job.)
5. Now ask, What common theme links these three sections? That theme will be the chorus, if the song has a chorus.
Hope this helps.
If you get stuck, I'm more than happy to help out with thoughts or suggestions.
Regards, Noel

Thank you Noel, I appreciate your suggestions and offer to help. As you know I still have the day job so it is hard to find time for this. But it is a road I have to travel and now is a good time to proceed.
I will keep you in the loop. Thanks.
By the way, I am working through the demo version of Rhyme Genie - it looks on first pass to be pretty good...
Let me open the free companion software which is TuneSmith next.

I just noticed we have a "Song Writting Forum". Who can keep track of them all? I should have moved this thread over there. I will have to try to visit there going forward.

There's a free program called VersePerfect that I've found to be pretty useful. Another method for writing is pretty much opposite of the one Noel proposed: come up with some provocative line and then work backwards to justify it. Typically, that might be the chorus. It's also helpful to make a list of words the represent ideas that you want in your song. Then make a list of rhyming words (I like RhymeZone) to see if you can form any interesting couplets.

Thanks much guys. All very good information. I am sure my "workflow" will include elements of all your suggestions. I downloaded VersePerfect and dropped the $25 for Rhyme Genie and TuneSmith. I figure my winnings will cover the cost of the tools. The Song is rough right now, but I have a couple weekends to try to pull it together. Thanks again

Looking for help. I have a nice little folk tune I have put together in BIAB. But I need lyrics to go with the tune. not to complicate things: unless the song is required to be in the folk genre, maybe changing biab styles may spark some lyric ideas

Dan,
If you have the tune happening, what I'd do is as follows.
5. Now ask yourself, What common theme links these three sections... that theme will be the chorus, if your song has a chorus. My views.... I agree with the approach above. Back in 1975 my college songwriting class suggested this process....especially if one is just starting to write song lyrics. It takes practice. Personally, I don't really use that approach as I'm able to write in lyric form from the beginning of a new idea. During the writing process it can be very easy to lose sight of the original song subject/context and start writing verses that don't relate to each other. It takes me several re-writes to get the lyrics to flow lyrically/phonically with the music.....and to my particular satisfaction. OP....good luck with your endeavor.

VersePerfect is great for helping find rhyming words. So is the dillfrog website, which has a crummy interface, but seems to be a little more loose in providing rhymes which can be a good thing.
Once you are done with this immediate need, take Pat Pattision's class (I think Noel was the first here to recommend it). Then work on it as much as you practice scales and rudiments.

so far, there's no comparison to the human imagination for writing song lyrics.
find a co-writer and share the credit and money
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Trax I did. I used this "tool" to help me write In a Folk Mood, over in the 2017 contest. I am a newbee song writer at best, so I looked for some type of aid to give me structure and format. I had a spare $25 dollars at the time and I had fun using the tool. BTW, the free upgrades add a lot of enhanced functionality.

find a co-writer and share the credit and money +1 Songs are stories set to music. Stories come from experience, not software.
I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
