I have contacted support but so far no reply, so perhaps someone here has the solution.

I got my BiaB Audiophile 2017 on Saturday, had the "BiaB has stopped working" messages when I closed BiaB.

After updating to 466 it now happens when I close some dialog boxes, currently the Midi Options box is a dead cert.

Also, I tried the demos and tried copying what's done on innumerable videos, but all I hear is drums.

PC is a dedicated DAW machine, has other DAWs and music software working for years. All drivers up-to-date, plenty HD space and 12GB RAM.

Any suggestions?

Could be various things, and if you mail directly to support@pgmusic.com they usually respond quickly.

Are you running from the delivered WD drive? I prefer copying all the Realtracks and Drums folder to a SEPARATE partition or better dedicated internal drive if you don't have a laptop. PS you'll have to readdress the folders' location within BIAB. The original one is my backup.

For starters: a) Run BIAB and Realband as administrator in properties of the corresponding .exe files.. b) run the installers again to begin with. c)dump or better rename the extension of 2 files in the bb folder, interface.bbw, and mysetup.DK. Start BIAB again, but all your settings will be gone.

You could check if your windows is up to date, experienced that to be important these days. Could be a virus killer and firewall are hampering, especially USB externals are seen as potential malware; i had serious problems regarding USB and an audio interface, especially with 2017 Bitdefenders' firewall. Yes, from the HD. I have a laptop, the reason for paying the extra 100's to get the external HD version was precisely to avoid filling my built-in HD.

What installers?

The description in the manual does not correspond to what I see in the directories of the hard drive.

I'll try the renaming and running as admin.

No virus killer, didn't touch no firewall settings, no internet connection (too slow and unreliable here) so network card drivers are disabled.

OK, I renamed mysetup.DK to mysetup_.DK. There was no interface.bbw.

I restarted BiaB as admin. Windows asked if that is OK, I said yes.

BiaB started and asked if I wanted to associate BiaB files with Windows Explorer. Never had that dialog before. I said no.

I opened Midi setup, pressed OK - no change.
"BiaB has stopped working".

I hope Support comes up with some suggestions.

I wanna start playing already!

Even if you are running from the external hard drive, you still need to do a minimal installation. You should find the main installer program in the root folder of the external hard drive. You should run that and you'll be presented with options to either run from the external drive or run from your machine. The installation utility will install the fonts, the DirectX Plugins, Sforzando and Coyote WT, the included PDF driver (if you desire), etc. Then, once everything is installed, I don't think the installer creates a shortcut, so you'll need to do so, but it's the main BIAB program in the BB folder, not the one in the root folder (I think it's BBW.EXE, but I'm not in front of my machine right now). Likewise, create a shortcut for RealBand. Be sure to set them to run as administrator.

You'll need to make sure that your external hard drive always connects with the same drive letter, or things won't work. Also, once you get BIAB and RealBand up and running, you'll need to go specify where the RealTracks/RealDrums are (it will probably prompt you), as well as tell it about your audio and MIDI ports and driver configuration.

Please let use know if you can get it working.

Just to add to the other comments, the installation program that needs to be run is called "setup.exe" on the root directory of the USB drive (as John has mentioned). It would pay to right-click on this and select "Run as administrator".

That was the final key to the mystery, thank you!
The mannual says it is usually in C:\bb\ but this is not true. It is in the root.

So far the external USB drive is mounting to F: every time.

Everything seems to be working fine as long as I don't select Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
