Is there some way during a live BIAB performance to cause all instruments to stop and then manually trigger (with a button or foot pedal) either a 4,8, or 12 bar drum or bass break (Real Drums sequence or a custom wav or midi break) and after the break is done to resume the BIAB file's playback ?

I am a piano player. During a live gig I'd LOVE to be able to do this.

If BIAB can't do this, how would I accomplish this ?

Thanks for any hints,

Bob

Bob, it's a great idea, and one that has been asked for before, but I don't believe such a feature is currently available.

(Dare I suggest this), maybe it's a good one for the wishlist?

If you really want to do this in BIAB, the best you could do is to program in a section of drum break in your BIAB file, and then use the "Conductor" feature to play that section by hitting the appropriate trigger key. Unfortunately, even though you can use a MIDI keyboard as the trigger, when you do this, you lose the MIDI Thru track and won't hear your keyboard in the BIAB mix. So you would have to do this using a computer keyboard.

Thanks so much. I wasn't aware of the Conductor functionality.
And I can't seem to find the documentation for it.

Just so I understand: are you saying I could play in a 4 bar break and an 8 bar break of bass or drums somewhere in the BIAB file, designate those 4 or 8 bars with a computer key, and no matter where I am in the BIAB playback it will jump to that solo ?

And what happens when the 4 or 8 bars breaks are done ? Does playback automatically resume the full BIAB music at the point where I punched the break key ? If not how do I get back to the point where I invoked the break ?

And do I put the breaks, after the end of the normal BIAB tune ? I assume I don't put the breaks in the middle of the BIAB chords or they would automatically play every time I played the BIAB file, correct ?

Thanks for any clarification.

All the best, Newbie Bob

If all else fails, you could put together what you want to do, then save the song as a WAV or MP3 file. The down side is that your arrangement will be the same whenever you play it.

Open up the BIAB 2017 PDF user manual and look at about page 134; you should see the section on how to use the Conductor feature.

It's also listed in the table of contents towards the end of Chapter 5 as "THE CONDUCTOR".

Although the conductor does seem to have a bug in the MODE section...even though "next bar" is selected, as soon as you then use one of the preset jump to locations (under Custom) the Mode radio button always jumps back to the Default.

If you can't get Conductor to do what you want try here:

You can try MIDI Hotkey Portable http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Multimedia/Audio/MIDI-Hotkey-Portable.shtml

Right click > Properties > Compatibility > XP > Run as Admin
you can set it to the high C or low C to send the spacebar keystroke.
Set other keys to any other keystroke or hotkeys.

Converts signals from midi devices (e.g. epiano) to keystrokes

MIDI Hotkey Portable is a handy and reliable utility designed to enable you to control your computer using a midi device like a piano. Not only can you configure the notes you can also configure the sustain pedal, play, stop, record buttons.

There are many ways to use MIDI Hotkey Portable: You can use this software to make recording easier (e.g. control cubase, samplitude, using your electric piano). But also you are able to launch programs like firefox or even control the mouse.

For Mac you can try midiStroke http://charlie-roberts.com/midiStroke/

to send midi notes from your midi keyboard to Keystroke.

You can use it with Quicksilver https://qsapp.com/about.php
to work like Conductor in the Win version.
So you can use the (Control+F) Play > Play Special > Play from Bar #...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
