Keith, I'm not sure but I think the Standard MIDI Spec. doesn't support a Tone message.
There are certain messages reserved for general 'Effects' (Control 12 & 13), and Control 74 is for 'Brightness', but this would be determined by how the MIDI instrument interpreted the message.
Others may know more though and I'm sure will chip in.

Hmm A tone control is a rather odd thing to see anyway IMOP Considering we are all used to the more normal separate bas a treble controls al la hifi These normally have 10 to 20 db cut or boost either side of a centre point On each control, Where as a tone control in the normal sense of the word is normally just a progressive cut from a certain frequency as the control is progressed., Usually this is a simple top cut. As such this is an Audio function. I also don’t know of an effective way of achieving this with a single Midi CNTR Just my thoughts Mike
The tone control is specifically for RealTracks, RealDrums, and Audio tracks. It is implemented much like the "tone" knob you found on consumer stereos, and has been around for a long time (shortly after RealTracks/RealDrums were implemented to help them sit better in the MIDI mix - remember, they were originally designed one-off tracks to augment your MIDI tracks; RealStyles with a full complement of a RealTrack "band" came about later). RealTracks came about in version 2008.5 (if I remember correctly).
Remember, the first RealTracks set only included:
Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Ev 085, Artist: Tony King
Pedal Steel, Background Ev 085, Artist: Steve Hinson
Sax, Tenor, Jazz Sw 140, Artist: Jack Stafford
Sax, Tenor, Jazz Sw 140 (Double-Time), Artist: Jack Stafford
That was it. And then the next several iterations were just a few more instruments until they knew they had a hit on their hands and went full steam ahead with the 100 RTs at a time.
I remember that it was requested at the time to have separate treble/bass controls, but they kept just the single tone control instead. I think the thought was that if you wanted more control, then you would just load an equalizer plugin and shape the sound that way, but for simple treble or bass boost, the tone control sufficed.

Don't forget that you can make the mixer wider which at some point changes the tone control to a slider. It's much easier to use that way. I wrote an article referencing the tone control in the Tips and Tricks Forum that you might find of interest.

Thanks guys for your input. I was fairly sure that the tone control didn't work for MIDI, but what threw me was that in earlier versions of BIAB, the tone control was (IIRC)greyed out/unavailable and couldn't be adjusted. In 2017 you can adjust the tone control, but it has no bearing on the sound.
If you want to control filters via MIDI to a harware- or soft synth's individual MIDI sound or audio output, in BIAB IMO you can only do this via MIDI controller messages. But only if the sound module or VST plug has those functions built in. As far as i know you can do that with some soft synths f.i. like HALION SE, HALION, Hypersonic 2, and then you will have to set controller values addressed that way (look in your sound source's MIDI specs table for the right CC#) in your piano-roll editor specifically here: F

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
