One feature I really love on RealBand is that I can load a midi file and have it play as an audition before choosing other VSTs. Do Coyote drums instrument follow the general midi standard? Many of the drum kit VSTs that I use do not follow this standard such as Battery 4 and DrumLab so it would be useful at least to be able to discover the notes for each instrument prior to loading these VSTs.

Thanks

jonel,

I think what midi notes correspond to what midi drum instruments depends on the midi sound module you're using. You mentioned Coyote but did not indicate if you mean Coyote WT or Coyote Forte. Coyote WT ships with Band-in-a-Box and RealBand. The Coyote webpage, +++ Coyote Forte DXI +++ says Forte is GM2 compatible so Coyote WT most likely is GM compatible.

PG Music has a great tutorial page on midi drums +++ HERE ++. GM2 added few additional drum sounds. A list of both the GM and GM2 drum assignments is +++ HERE +++

Finally, PG Music describes using the Dynamic 3D Drum Kit Window built into RealBand starting on page 203 of the user manual.

Thanks Jim,
It was the Coyote WT I've been referring to. I do believe this is really just a wrapper for a wavetable synth. But it appears that both are GM and, as such, I can use the notes as a reference point for the drum instruments to be played.

Thanks for the useful information

Yes, the Coyote WT (and the Coyote Forte) both follow the General MIDI standard (and of course the Coyote Forte also includes the additional percussion/drum assignments from the GM2 standard). Also, Cakewalk TTS-1 is GM2 compatible as well.

If you want to use a standard MIDI file, but have a non-GM drum library that you want to use, you'll have to pull out your Batman decoder ring and remap the notes used in the GM library to the notes used for corresponding drum sounds in the non-GM library, and then change those notes to correspond to what your non-GM library is expecting. Using the event list on the channel 10 track should show which notes are used, then you can look them up in a GM MIDI drum chart and figure out which notes are the kick, snare, cymbals, etc. Then assign the notes to the appropriate instrument in your drum VST, or change the MIDI track notes to match what the VST library is expecting (will vary from library to library).

There may be some tools out there to do the conversion for you, but I didn't really see anything with a quick Google search. Most drum tracks will only use a handful of drum sounds, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do. But it will take some work.

Thanks John. I have some experience at doing this from other projects. I thought tyhe drum rack in Ableton was going to help me here because you can set the Midi note to receive and the midi note to send, but it turns out these are for another purpose and don't help at all. I suppose it helps to keep your feet on the ground by working at that level.

I do have TTS as part of SONAR but wasn't sure how to map this into Ableton. Many of the other VSTs inform you that they are only of use in SONAR.

Sometimes I have used the Data Filter feature for this ..
Just thought I'd mention this in case it helps.
The Data Filter allows remapping the defined data to the desired destination. It can home in and change MIDI data pretty precisely.
There is an option for a second data filter also .. so you can get pretty accurate editing in one pass.

The Data Filter check box is available in the MIDI Edit options (cut/copy/transpose/etc)

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
