I have contacted PG music about issue and have done everything they asked me to do. Updated audio driver etc. Still does the same. Real Band does not have that issue. Seems like it may have started after last update. Suggestions windows 8

Hi LD1,

This could be antivirus related.

What is your antivirus software? Do you have it set to exclude the \bb folder from being checked?

Also, do you run BIAB from your computer's hard drive or a USB drive?

Lastly, does the same behaviour apply if you start BIAB by right-clicking on the startup icon and then selecting "Run as administrator"?

Regards,
Noel

I changed anti-virus after this happened. no change. i will try the things you suggested. I am running on hard drive, I just tried admin. no luck. I was running charters antivirus but i had a back up . Advanced system care. I can use windows defender if needed. Realband works if that helps.

LD1,

Ok... there seems to be something in your setup that's not happy. Often to track down somethings can be a slow process. Also, please keep in mind that I am not PG Music staff. I am just a user like you.

You will need to be patient if you want help trying to solve this. As I'm sure you can appreciate, it's not at all easy trying to solve a problem without seeing the computer, its setup, and by doing it only using text and typing.

Firstly, we need to eliminate the most obvious possibilities.

1. Before doing anything, though, under the options menu, there is a choice that says "Save Preferences As". Select this and save your preferences, this means that they can always be reloaded after we try various plans of solving.

2. Right-click on the startup icon, select 'Properties' from the popup menu. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, select the option to always run BIAB as an administrator. While there, also set BIAB to run compatible to Windows XP.

3. In your antivirus software, actively select to exclude the \bb folder from being checked.

4. Now exit BIAB and fully shut down your computer (not simply put it on to standby). Start your computer.

Does BIAB still behave the same?

The Realband clue doesn't give me any major thoughts. It possibly suggests that you could have a faulty or incompatible VST set to load in BIAB. What VSTs or DXis (if any) do you use?

Lastly, when you say you run the program from the hard drive, are the Realtracks and Realdrums installed on the same hard drive in \bb or do you use those from elsewhere?

Regards,
Noel

What VST/DXi do you have loading? Anything special there?

Also...

You mentioned in your initial post that you thought it might have been caused by an update. That's sometimes possible. I've had an update that once or twice has not worked on my system but it hasn't been a general problem.

To revert to a previous update, go to the link below.

http://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm

When there, download the previous update and manually install it. (I'd go back a couple of updates to when you knew that it was definitely working.) Just check that the paths are correct when you get to that part of the installation.

If you want to check what update is presently installed, go to "Help | About Band In A Box".

After starting BiaB, go to Help > Utilities > Display Log text.

The top of the file has the latest data.

Check for any information there that might indicate the cause of slow startup (Time to count plugins, etc).

- C:\bb\MaxPluginsToScan.txt file limited the number of counted plugins, likely because of a previous crash. Rename this file and reboot to try to scan plugins again

this is where it first started

LD1,

I mentioned the possibility of VST/DXi plugins a couple of posts back. ON the forum, there are been some instances where plugins have slowed the program right down and have even made it hang.

Have a look at Kent's post in the below thread.

http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=369584&Searchpage=1&Main=53078&Words=maxpluginstoscan&Search=true#Post369529

Kent's from PG Music and he recommends deleting "MaxPluginsToScan.txt" if it is present. I've have a look in my \bb\ folder and I do not have that file present. (I have BIAB 2017.)

Regards,
Noel

Hi LD1

As you can see there is an inexhaustible list of small things that do go wrong and most of them are user computer specific

I had similar problems a year or so ago and after many attempts decided to take the program off the hard drive and on to my computer which is a much faster way to use anyway

Besides the excellent advice given do these simple tasks just to see if it can be made to work

A.I assume that you have done a virus scan to both your computer and external hard drive

B.Unplug your external hard drive and after 20 seconds reconnect

1.DiscClean both the computer and the hard drive
2.Also defrag both drives
3.Clean registry while you are at it
4.Shut down and reload
5.Try running the program
6.Download a fresh latest update and reinstall over the top
7.Shut down and reboot

I have noticed over the last 25 years of use that faulty/incomplete downloads and installations are the cause of most specific user problems - a corrupt file seems to be most likely as other bb programs on the external hard drive are working ok

The capacity of the external hard drive is small with little free space make sure you have not added anything to the bb folder on it

Dropping back a step after reading all of the above:

Do you have BIAB 2017 or another version?

If the last update caused this, did you try rolling back to the prior version? Downloading the update again as Jazzman suggested?

Did you try Return to Factory Settings?

In other words, can you give us detail about what you've already tried, especially the advice from PG Music?

Is Windows 8 up to date? And just curious, why not 10?

As Jazzman alluded to just above, do you have free space on the drive where BIAB is located? Less than 15% as a general rule will cause a big hit in performance.

Have you run Defrag and Chkdsk to ensure your hard drive is working well?

I am running windows 8. It worked fine for 2 months. I think i have tried everything that has been suggested. Kent at PM music got me to delete Max plug in a few days ago. I just scanned on the dx plugin option. will see what that does. it is on my hard drive. not external. also as stated it does not do this with Real Band

We should always consider their opinion first, before asking all those stupid questions here; at least mine knows especially more about windows cleaning than i do .. F

PS i had Windows 8 for a short while on my laptop as it came with it, updated that to 8.1, and i must say its very stable on that computer, no problems over 3 years by now, and it's used daily by my wife LoL. But windows 10 seems the most stable one, though i still have occasional permissions issues with installers and need "takeownership" or other tricks quite often with the program data folder, during installing start menu shortcuts especially. Windows 7 was really annoying for those errors, and why i changed to 10. W10 seems the fastest booter sofar. I remember using a skimmed Windows XP Lite version on a much slower old PC in the past which i used too for speed.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
