Greetings all,
I've been working on a CD project using BIAB with a vocalist by the name of Norma Kelly, a well known country singer here in Perth Western Australia.
We have completed four songs of a twelve song project and I thought I would put one of the songs out there for comment. All of the instruments were generated in BIAB and then imported into Steinberg Nuendo 3 where the vocal was added and various VST's utilised. I don't have a web site as yet so I have posted the song on You Tube and it can be accessed via the link provided below. There is a slight reduction in quality in the process of uploading to You Tube
however the sound is fairly close to the original file. The song is called "If I Could Only Fly" and is a cover of a Merle Haggard/Willie Nelson song.
I would appreciate any feedback you may have as we all know this sort of thing is a huge learning process.

Best regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum. You've done an excellent job with this song; the backing is great and Norma has a beautiful voice. I'll leave it to others with better ears than me to make any technical comments.
BTW, it's better to post music on the "Off Topic" forum, as this forum is generally for issues related to the product itself.
Again, well done mate.

Cheers,
Keith

Wow, all I can say is "very nice". That was a treat to listen to. Norma has a great country voice.

Hello, Paul:

This is very nice work, and a truly professional application of our beloved software. I would not fault the mix in any way, and it's a great song by a great vocalist -- you should sell some records.

I would suggest, however, some thought to dynamics. As you know, pro recordings (read: 'commercial') have, for a long time, relied on increasing volumes, complexity, accents, and modulations as the song progresses. This track is very nice all the way through, but that may be a problem -- it's pretty much the same, all the way through. It kind of lacks dynamics. Now maybe that's exactly what you are going for, being as this is a Willie tune, but if I were producing it (I emphasize that I am not a producer), I might consider a couple of things.

I was looking for a key modulation for the final verse, like so many pop and country ballads. Your singer is great, and it sounds like she had a much wider range than is being used here, and could crank up the pitch a half or a full step. This should be easy to do with BB.

Along with that, she seemed to be sort of laying back -- she sounds like the kind of singer that can really belt it out in a club, and some of that would have been nice as the songs builds toward a climax.

In the same vein, I was also looking for some increasing dynamics in the instrumentation -- some heavier pickup percussion -- tom toms, cymbals, whatever fits, and perhaps increasing drama or addition of other instruments as well.

Realize that these are thoughts about taste, and more than that, about what seems to sell, commercially. Take it with a grain of salt. All in all, this is really really nice.

By the way, Paul, are you the same Paul Young that made that great recording several years ago about the woman who habitually shoplifted at the butcher shop, "Every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you."?

Best,

Brad -- My FAWM

Thanks to all you guys for taking the time to comment ...it does the heart good to know I'm heading in the right direction thanks to
such a fantastic software package. It allows the average Joe to express their musical creativity and to share that with others around the world....AMAZING!!!!.
With the help of a friend I will soon have a simple web site up and running and I will post more songs on that site as the project progresses.
Once again thanks for your interest and support.

Regards

Paul

PS.....Brad No that wasn't me and I think you've been watching too much Monty Python.........great line!!!!!

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum. Nice arrrangement and great singing by Norma!

I was in Perth last winter - wow, what a great city! Do you know a pedal steel player named Milton Quackenbush? If so, say hello to him from me.

Have Fun!

Hi Paul.
Great to see another BIAB user in Perth.
What suburb are you in? I live in the RAAFA retirement village at Merriwa.
Are you gigging anywhere?

Paul,

Another welcome to the forum and more kudos on a job well done. This is great effort by all involved, starting with a great song well produced and mixed then topped off with Norma's wonderful interpretation.

A very easy listen.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comment it is much appreciated. Of course it all comes down to the great software you guys have been working on all these years.
It never ceases to amaze me how small the world has become.....Norma has been working with Milton off and on for two years or so, both live gigs and recording so she knows he and his family very well. Rest assured your message will be passed on!!
Keep up the great work at PG Music and I'm sure we can all look forward to great things in the future.

Best regards,

Paul
