I'm just curious who here actively looks to improve their song writing skills, and who feels great with "I'm good with where I'm at."

I really don't think one is right or wrong by any means. I just know some are driven to constantly "try" to improve.

Others are blissful just writing away with what they know and are perfectly happy with that.

Excited to hear answers! smile

I'm always buying new songwriting books if they seem useful. But at this point in the game I'm spending most of my songwriting efforts on finding better SONG IDEAS and HOOKS. Songwriting is a skill, the art is in the application of the skill like playing an instrument.

Good thread.

I personally think we all strive to be better at our craft in one way or another. I dont always consciously look for ways to improve but im constantly looking for new topics and ideas to write about and different ways to approach writing to keep it fresh.

I'm currently taking an online course in music production and composition that teaches how to program music rather than write music in the traditional sense. It is an enlightening concept. It is midi based, uses synths, VSTi' and using the piano roll, one does not have to play a traditional musical instrument in order to create a song. Using high quality midi sounds, synths and libraries, the end product sounds professional and radio ready.

I only try to improve my song writing skills (or Barry's <grin>) when we are writing together.
It's fun to have another musician friend that is open to ideas, as I am to his .. actually he usually starts writing most of the songs .. I just pitch in and he is fine with that. Once in a rare while I'll get inspired and start the idea.
We always end up with something better. That's why he invites me, and why I show up.

I'm happy to have a starting point. I seem to work better that way.
Show me the concept and I'll show you how I would improve it.
Without outside input I can't really see how to improve. How would I know what I'm missing if I missed it??

He learns theory from me, I learn ideas from him.
It's worked for us for almost 50 years now.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Honestly....I'm happy with where I am in my song writing endeavors.

In my mind the above is the key approach if one wants to genuinely improve their overall song writing skills/abilities.
It forces one to get out of their comfort zone genre of choice and actually use more of the English language in expressing themselves with more originality.
I'm always keeping my mind open to a subject I've not written about.
Admittedly, several of mine are derived from personal experiences and life assessments.

Of course, that still does not guarantee they will have mass appeal during one's stages of personal promotion.
Personally, decades ago I gave up all fantasies of thinking I could write songs that would have mass appeal or make me any buckaroos. smile
I write songs for my own enjoyment and have no illusions.

To those that still maintain their desire for commercial success (at any level) in their song writing efforts I wish all the best of fortune.

That's my take.....back to it.

"Happy with" and "not able to do any better" are two really different things. If I had hours a day to sit and write I'd have at least a shot at getting better, but I can't think of anything worse than being penned up in a room for 10 hours trying to write a good song. Until I hear a song of mine on MTV or CMT, or somebody hands me a statue for song of the year, I will always feel like I fell short. In my own mind's ear, every song of mine is a masterpiece, because every song I have ever written was about an event in my life, which all meant something to me. Also, that is part of my life's philosophy, where I look in the mirror while I brush my teeth every morning and think "The only one I have to impress today is ME."

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
