Yes, good article.
I know many people believe that defragging is a waste of time. I'm not one of them. If data could be delivered with no delay from any disk, let alone a highly fragmented disk, why did SSD's even need to be invented?

And to increase speed without incurring heat. With mechanical drives, you can increase rotational speed, but you end up with a lot of heat when you do that. You run much cooler, use less power, and get better performance by just flipping electrical bits. Regarding defragging, with the advent of the NTFS file system to replace FAT, the need to defrag was not as great, as NTFS was designed for efficiency, and actually wrote data all over the disk, so unless your disk is getting full, there is usually enough contiguous clusters to write your file. However, over time, you lose that and you need to defrag. But you don't want everything stacked together in one contiguous cluster of files, either. Because as soon as you edit any of those files after defragging, you start incurring fragmentation again pretty quickly. This article is somewhat dated, but provides some pretty good information. So yes you need to defrag, but just not as often as when we had FAT or FAT32 systems.

I built my first PC in the early 80's and subsequently bought a new Dell every three years until 2011 when I bought a Mac, installed 20gb RAM, and haven't looked back. Six years later I've never replaced or defragged the HD. I frequently run Logic Pro X, BiaB, and multiple instances of Izotope products simultaneously with no crashes or latency issues. For many reasons I won't bore you with I've never considered returning to the PC world. I will mention that every OS update has been quick and seamless. Unlike some folks I like Apple's "we'll take care of you" cloistered world  FWIW Bud

I never defragged because I never cared if it took a program .84 seconds longer to load. When you think about how long you are without access to your computer while defrag runs.....
Plus the NTFS thing that John addressed. Defrag was a bailout for Geek Squad level techs who had no real idea what to do. Those guys are HORRIBLE!

I'm running 2TB SSD's on one of our development systems. Never going back. Have SSDs yet improved to where they have more write cycles? I can't tell you how many Netbooks I got calls for because the drive ran out of write cycles. At least a dozen, back when the novelty of the mini sized computer was still in place. I believe back then it was 50,000 writes and the drive was done.
I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

It was an interesting video Larry.
I certainly don't intend to get into any debate between the benefits / dis-benefits between the two systems, but do I get annoyed when Mac users refer to the Microsoft product as 'windoze', as if the Mac is far superior. They don't do themselves any favors using these terms.
All products have good and bad points.
I use both. In fact I develop software for both (and Android). Frankly, Apple is by far the most difficult to work with in this area.
