I'm sure this is an easy thing to do, I just haven't figured out how to do it. I'm using RealBand 2017 for Windows. I have a simple 5-part midi tune that I've scored out. In other words, this tune has no block chords. Rather it has five individual parts: solo, strings, horns, piano (rhodes), and basses.

The problem I'm having is that whatever voice I select for the first track (solo), all tracks get this voice, even if I specify different ones for the other tracks.

My computer doesn't have any optional soft synths loaded at this time, so the Coyote DXi synth is the only one available, apart from the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. I've tried selecting different parts with Coyote, but it doesn't make any difference. Still just the first track.

I tried using the instructional YouTube videos that are posted here, generating Midi Super tracks. Boy, was that a disaster. And the mess it generated still used just the voice for the first track.

So, what's the trick? How do I get each track to play its individual instrument?

And on a somewhat related note, I like to look at the musical staff. Yes, I read music and I'm most comfortable when I can watch the score as the music is being played. I'm also most comfortable editing the music from the score. Problem is, when I click on the note symbol from the selection panel, only the track that's highlighted in red appears. I've tried selecting multiple tracks, and when I do so, the first one I select is red, but the others are yellow, and the yellow ones aren't shown in the score window. I know that I can select a different track from the score window using the dropdown shown at the top. I've looked in the OPT menu and didn't find anything. Please tell me there's a way to display the entire score.

Well, that's about it. I eagerly wait for any help you can provide.

Michael,

Each of the instruments in your midi file will need to be assigned their own midi channel. It presently sounds like you have them all playing the same channel.

When the file was created, did you make a multi-channel midi file?

Noel

You can press F2 on a track to see the channel being used. If each track is using the same channel, you can use the MIDI rechannel command change the channel on each track. Rinse and repeat for each track.

Also, if you brought the file in as a MIDI type 0 file, you should use the extract channels to tracks first.

One last thing; after Re-Channeling the MIDI tracks, go back to the Coyote synth and assign the right sound to the appropriate MIDI channel.
This may important once they get re-channeled.

Rechanneling has a few different ways to do it.
You can simply right-click a track and select a different channel for that particular track, in which case RB will 'force' it to play on that channel even though the data says a different one.
This feature may/may not work in other DAWs, so sometimes using the Edit-MIDI- Rechannel method is better as this is hard writing it once you save the file.
Using this method it is important to have the whole track selected (highlighted) as it changes only highlighted sections. (CTRL + A is a quick way to highlight a whole track- a familiar 'Select All' shortcut from Windows)

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks for the tips, guys. Once you mentioned that I had to assign a different channel to each instrument, I knew the boneheaded mistake I'd made. It's been too long.

What I did was, from the mixer window, I just right-clicked on the little black box just above the track number at the bottom of each track control. I then selected the channel from the menu's selection of options. This did the trick and got me where I wanted to go.

Next step is to dump the awful MS Wavetable Synth. I'll try Coyote first, but I have several other VSTs on this system that I'm also gonna try.

Update: well, I just tried five other VST plugins, most if not all of which are 64-bit, but for some reason RB thinks they're not real VST plugins. I also got a popup telling me J-Bridge isn't installed. Kind of annoying, that. Finding out that I need to shell out 15 Euros to get 32-bit VSTs to load into RB. It isn't the amount so much as it's the principle. But it was even popping up when I was trying to load 64-bit VSTs. So I don't really understand that. At all.

Actually, Coyote WT (as opposed to Coyote Forte, which you must buy, is the same as the MS Wavetable Synth. It just takes the MS synth and wraps it as a DXi synth that allows you to do things such as direct rendering to WAV of MIDI data. Soundwise, they are the same, however.

I presume by VST's, you really mean VSTi's (the "i" means instrument). Not all VSTi's are multi timbral nor General MIDI, meaning you may have to assign a new instance to each MIDI track and manually assign an appropriate instrument patch to each one

RealBand is a 32-bit application and can only natively use 32-bit plugins. It's that way for all 32-bit DAW applications. However, the work-around is to use a product like jBridge, which lets you use 64-bit plugins in a 32-bit application. No other way around that.

No, 32-bit VSTi's should work just fine with RB; you only need jBridge to use 64-bit VSTi's. And if you are truly using VST effects (versus VSTi instruments), then you need to assign those to slots 2-4, as slot 1 is used for the VSTi for MIDI tracks. Again, you'll need jBridge to use 64-bit plugins with RB (a 32-bit application), but 32-bit instruments and plugins should work fine.

You didn't say which VST(i)'s you tried to use, so providing additional information should help us help you out here.

Thanks for clearing that stuff up, John. Heh, all this time, when I've had a choice between d/l'ing a 32 bit or 64 bit VST, I was choosing the 64 bit ones. So now I guess I'll go back and choose some 32 bit ones -- for Real Band at least.

I was wondering why Coyote sounded so ordinary. Heh, now I know! There's a ton of really good free stuff out there. A lot more than I have the time to sort through. Have you ever checked out the load of free VSTs at the Plug-in Boutique? (pluginboutique.com) It's mind-boggling.

jbridge is cheap; I've owned it for many years before PGMusic embraced it as a way to support 64-bit plugins within their 32-bit applications.

I've got about a terabyte worth of VSTi sound libraries VST effects, and soundfonts, paid for and free, so way more than I can ever muddle through.

And I have my VST folder set up to separate out the various flavors of VST/VSTi's:

D:\AppsData\VST\32-bit <- 32-bit VST's with corresponding 64-bit VST (see below)
D:\AppsData\VST\32-bit only
D:\AppsData\VST\64-bit <-- 64-bit VST's with corresponding 32-bit VST (see below)
D:\AppsData\VST\64-bit only
D:\AppsData\VST\jbridge\32-bit only for 64-bit host <-- created with jbridge bridging utility
D:\AppsData\VST\jbridge\64-bit only for 32-bit host <-- created with jbridge bridging utility

* Note, specific bridging not needed in BIAB/RealBand, as it is aware of jbridge on the machine and does the bridging automatically.

That makes it easier to specify the VST's I want my various DAW's to see (that don't natively support bridging or multi-bit VST(i)'s.

So, in a 32-bit host, I would specify the following VST folders to scan:

D:\AppsData\VST\32-bit
D:\AppsData\VST\32-bit only
D:\AppsData\VST\64-bit only for 32-bit host

In a 64-bit host, I would specify the following VST folders to scan:

D:\AppsData\VST\64-bit
D:\AppsData\VST\64-bit only
D:\AppsData\VST\32-bit only for 64-bit host

This makes management of VST's so much easier (for my workflow, anyway).

John, thanks for the tips. Currently I've been saving all of my VSTs (including VSTis) to a single folder. I like this sort of organization that you've got going on, though. I think I'll set things up here similarly.

I have a few that I've bought, as apps, for my iPad. Too bad I can't transfer them over to this machine. I've got some cool stuff loaded onto my iPad. So far I haven't bought any yet for this machine.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
