Graham,
I`m fine with you playing this on your shows... so you just link from Sound Cloud? I can send the WAV if you pm me.
Cool... a song about your part of the world by a Canadian, sung by a South African, on Scottish radio!

Robert

Just linked from soundcloud Robert, quality's excellent

Robert,

Such a beautiful write with some very surprising chord changes.
Top notch really!
Joanne: this definitely must be your best vocal ever!

Hello all
Sorry I have been a little absent on this thread. I have been up in Zimbabwe visiting my mother with very little internet access. I am now feeling well rested and tearing to go!

Thanks for the great comments on this song and thank you to Robert for giving me the opportunity to record these vocals. I throughly enjoyed it and am glad the song turned out well.

Fabulous the way the melody has propelled the lyrics into such a beautiful song. The harmonies are simply astounding. Actually, the whole song is beautiful. Great production too.

A song in the best of the story folk tradition told with an excellent lyric/melody, and vocal.

And added to that is an arrangement and RT choice that is enough to carry the song (and needing nothing more).

The lyric is a story of wonder. One of the most poetic and literate sea stories we’ve read or heard.

Parenthetically, I’ve enjoyed the “sea shanties” posted here over the years. I realize that this is not at all of that genre; however, the scope of the genre has widened over the years to include really interesting material. Pardon, the song couldn’t help but send the old guy on a digression smile

Well done you collaborators!

The production sounds excellent and Joanne, your singing is absolutely superb. So much attention has been paid to detail in the creation of this song and its presentation! The final product is a terrific collaboration. I also found myself captivated by the chord progression... the sequence had a very haunting and mysterious sound; it was an excellent backdrop for Robert's imagery.

All the best,
Noel

Noel,

Thank you I`m glad you enjoyed our efforts. As said before, most of the fine tuning on the mix was done by Joanne and I`ve learnt a lot from being able to see what was done in RB.
I appreciate your mentioning of the chords - I tried to go somewhere different in the chorus to add some drama.

I have to agree with Alan. Nicely done by you both. Tom

Thank you, Tom!

Happy to hear you enjoyed this- that`s two "haunting" songs in a row - gonna change tack for the next one!

Rob & Anne-Marie,

Thank you for that... Joanne has recorded many very fine vocals; of course I`m biased, but I`d have to agree with you this is right up there!

J&B,
Thank you!
I`ll have to search through the back catalogue for those sea shanties - the acapella ones are often really powerful.
I`m happy you enjoyed the story here, sketch as it is.
Funny you should say " needing nothing more" on the track choices - I spent several days trying to integrate some uillean pipe loops into the song, being very partial to the celtic sound. Having a second opinion is a good way to get some distance on things you feel stuck on with these collaborations!

Torrey,
The weather terminology sounds so dramatic I changed the chorus to a minor key to emphasise that.
Many thanks for your kind comments!

Hello, Robert

Very nice collaboration!
Joanne's voice is really fitted to this tune.
Simple but very strong melody!
I like the chord progression at "come away now I tell you true".
It accentuates this song very well.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hi Shigeki,
Thank you!
Yes, Joanne has such a great voice for folk songs so I thought of her right away when this was written.
I`m always interested to hear the things you notice about song structure and really appreciate your comments.

Greg,
I`m happy you enjoyed our work.
There was very little to do once Joanne sent me her beautiful vocal - as said before, I did try to complicate the arrangement before the penny dropped.
Cheers,
Robert

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
