I still have 2011 RB on a notebook that we use when performing, but there is a minor annoyance with that installation.

Everything works fine, except for loading of mp3 files. Then it fails with a pop up about a problems running an .EXE file, but the name for the .EXE is a shorten version so I haven't tracked down what it might be.

I haven't had a chance to try 2017 RB on the notebook yet, so I don't know if the mp3 loading issue is specific to RB 2011, something in the Win10 installation or some issue that happened when RB 2011 was installed.

Has anyone else any any issues with loading .mp3 files on RB 2011, or newer?

I'll test with RB 2017 on the notebook to see that makes any difference.

Thanks,
Burt

STOM^.exe is the audio file converter,
you can turn the User Account Control down (Control Panel > User Accounts),
try right click STOM^.exe > Properties > Compatibility > Run as administrator.

Burt,

In addition to Pipeline's potential solution, you could also try right-clicking on the RB shortcut and try starting it using "Run as administrator". That might work, too.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks all,

I'll give that a shot. Likely it is a permission issue.

Finally had a chance to dig into the issue again.

Indeed selecting run as admin made it work, but no matter what even setting the STOM^.exe util to always run as admin it wouldn't seem to stick. Again if I right clicked and selected run as admin it would then process and after I dismissed the error dialog from RB the processed file was loaded into RB just fine.

What finally resolved it was to set RealBand 2011 to always run as admin, but of course windoze 10 always insists on asking me if I want to allow RealBand to make changes when I start it up now. Have to see if I can track down where to tell Windoze to not nag me. It's an annoyance, but at least I can now load .mpg files in RB on the notebook again.

Note this is much easier on Linux. That is to set user (and other) permissions on an application (when needed).

Another rainy day project will be to see if I can get RB configured under Wine to access my external MIDI synth module over USB. If I can do that, and if it runs well, then I'll just run it on Linux under Wine in the future.

Burt, I've been a beta tester for 7 or 8 years now. I don't remember the details of RB 2011 other than it worked fine. My systems have always been standard Windows installs, whatever the default is is what I've always used. I install Biab/RB off the discs and now the PG hard drive using the defaults too. Simple. Here's the bottom line:

I've never had any of the problems the computer geeks like yourself seem to have. These programs simply run and run well, that's it. The people who have problems tend to fall into two camps, true noobies who have barely used their PC's for email and web surfing, decided to jump into digital audio and can barely spell MIDI much less understand it. And high level geeks who are all the time messing with their systems, messing around with other OS's, using dubious 3rd party stuff that may or may not run well and other fun stuff like that. Some on this forum can handle all that just fine, understand what they're doing and don't have problems, others don't and have problems.

I have no idea what's with your laptop or your level of understanding but my only suggestion is to wipe it clean, reinstall Windows and start over. You can spend days going on a snipe hunt and finally figure out what's going on if you want but that's what I would do. I guarantee you whatever issues you're having will cease to exist.

Bob

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
