Looking for advice.

I am working on an album to be released in about a month using BIAB. Some of the songs are new and i need to copyright them. Others are older songs that I have copyrights for as acoustic demos. Do I need to update the existing copyrights if there are no major changes in lyrics, melody or chord progression? If so can I update those songs at the same time as I file to copyright the new songs?

Any advice is appreciated.

I am not a lawyer, but I believe the following is true:

You should not need to update copyright on existing songs, and you still own the rights, so what you do with them is your choice. You should copyright the new ones, however.

And remember, chord progressions are not copyrightable (otherwise, there would only be a single blues song in the world). smile But the lyrics and melody are.

There is more to it, but I would definitely look at the copyright office web site, and possibly even consult with a lawyer knowledgeable about copyright law.

And as I said, I am not a lawyer.

Thanks John. I thought I remembered it being just melody and lyrics that were covered by copyright. So all should be gpod.

When I re-record one of my songs with some differences, as long as it is obvious to me it's the same song and I call it the same song, I don't copyright the new version. But I'm not a music attorney either.

In one case (soon to be more), my wife added lyrics to my song. I did re-register that, and also filed with BMI to add her as a co-writer.

The specific performance (CD) can be copyrighted as well.

I am new to the site and I read in registering that all posts are owned also by PGmusic. Does that mean when I post one of my songs I am giving up partial ownership?

No, you are not giving away anything. You keep all rights to your song. All that's posted on the PG Music site is a link to your work that's hosted elsewhere (on your own site).

FlyTWA,

Welcome to the forum!

You can't post an audio file directly to the site. Instead you post the file where ever you want (popular sites include YouTube, SoundClick, SoundCloud, Reverb Nation, Bandcamp; some users have a personal or business website that stores their files) and then post a link to the file.

In short no, assuming they are your originals and were copyrighted by you in the past.

However...

If there is a significant change in the song or you have edited the song, added a new line, changed a melody, then yes, you should probably copyright again.

Since you have new songs to be copyrighted, here's my recommendation. Submit the new copyright as a collection and simply include the older songs. You can and should refer back to the original copyright registration numbers for the songs that you hold previous copyright on. The copyright form asks if any part of the composition is used from another registered work... so you should check yes and include the copyright number that is in your name.

Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.
You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

FWIW the owner of this site has stated many times that if you use the software to create the song, you own the rights to the song (not PGMusic), so I am curious as to which forum rules you reference.

I think the 'All Posts' reference mentioned may mean they can delete or edit the actual forum post if deemed necessary.
Like a general protection measure so we don't see 200 'Stairway To Heaven' posts causing legal costs for PGMusic. After all, it IS their forum, given freely for us to use.

I do not think this implies any ownership to a song. More of a 'Forum' control rule to protect the Forums.
Hope that helps (?)

That said; if you did indeed make a copy of someone's work and post a link, I would expect PGMusic to want to have the means to remove or edit the post .. since this is a copyright violation.

As long as it is legally 'yours' you will likely encounter no issues.
I am not a lawyer, just explaining how I would interpret that notice.

Make your sound your own!

exactly. I'm not splitting my royalty checks with anyone. BMI sends me the full amount. PG tells you that as a licensed user, the music you create with their software is yours and they don't own any percentage of it.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
