The MIDI editing features in BIAB Mac for melody and other tracks is quite appaling.

It would be SO SO SO useful to be able to create and hand-craft a new melody at the same time as the chord progressions.

A piano-roll exists for windows BIAB. Don't know what its like. As for so much in BIAB it has evolved - in a kludgy fashion over decades. And is a bit of a "parsons egg" but with truly great sounding backing tracks and a kitchen sink of features.

Yes still - after constant pleading..... the most OBVIOUS and basic but extremely useful for workflow feature - proper piano-roll editing... is lacking.

And incidentally using the notation score-editor doesnt cut it GUI User interface and useabilitywise. That simply doesn't cut muster either. horrible to use.

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET A ***GOOD*** PIANO ROLL EDITOR IN MAC BIAB???

You can use RapidComposerVST it will load the chord track from Biab.

The Mac version is next to useless for Melody & Lyrics.
My communications with support indicated no plan for piano roll editor but acknowledged that it was a regularly requested feature. Lol
I use the Windows version in Paralles for anything other than realtrack generation.

I'm a Windows user, but I wonder why this hasn't been implemented. I remember when the Windows version didn't have it, but then it was finally added in BIAB 2005. You would think in 12 years they could figure out how to do the same for the Mac version.

Yes, bit hard to fathom why anyone would think it acceptable not to have any reasonable way to edit midi in the OS X version. (Not to mention the non working lyric editor)

I've looked all over the net for a free piano roll vst for Mac and found nothing.
The only one that comes close to working is MiniHost but the Piano Roll don't sync to the host.
So at the moment the cheapest options is wait and hope that one is implemented or RapidComposer for $79 or wait for a sale and get it for $50.

You can try the RapidComposer DEMO

The demo version does not require internet connection, online activation or hardware key. Some features (loading/saving the composition, exporting MIDI or audio files, MIDI drag-and-drop count) are disabled or limited in the standalone version. The Melody Generator is not included in the demo version (please watch this video to have an idea about what it is capable of). The VST version is fully functional, except the host cannot restore its internal state. With all these limitations it is perfectly suitable for trying all the functionality of the application.

So, does the piano roll in rapid composer link/sync to the melody track in BIAB?
Can you create your melody in rapid composer then insert into BIAB melody track, or edit an existing BIAB melody track in RC.
I guess I'm asking, does it interact directly to the BIAB midi on the melody track.

Yes, yes, yes....
I load MiniHost then load RapidComposer into that, though you should be able to send the midi from RapidComposer out to your default synth/vsti without using MiniHost.

To Import the chords and midi from Biab to RapidComposer:
Mac BB Output Chords To Midi Track
If you want the RealCharts midi, In RealTrack Prefs > set it to Save RealCharts in midi.
In RapidComposer > Midi Import
Import and Analyze BB Chord Output
Import BUT DON'T ANALYZE other tracks.
See Pic below.

To Import chords from RapidComposer to Biab:
RapidComposer Export Chord Sheet to Biab

Just go thru and correct any chords that are not correct.
Save the project in RapidComposerVST also.
Save the Graph in MiniHost as well.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
