The First To Say Goodbye

I love those old Ray Price classics ... especially his country shuffles. I actually wrote this for a project submission but I think my vocal is too rough (inadequate). They wanted a song of love on the rocks in the style of Ray Price's "Release Me". This is what I came up with. Thanks for the listen!

Alan

The First To Say Goodbye
© 2017 Alan D. David, BMI / Diana Randall, BMI

(v1)
We both know this love of ours, ended long ago
But we just keep hanging on, for reasons we don’t know
We can’t seem to find a way, to simply let it die
And neither of us wants to be, the first to say goodbye

CHORUS
There’s no way to resurrect a love that’s gone this bad
We’ll never find the love and joy or laughter we once had
So I guess we’ll spend another day, of living this old lie
Cause neither of us wants to be, the first to say goodbye.

Instrumental Verse

There’s no reason we should be, together anymore
One of us should pack our bags, and walk right out the door
Instead we kid ourselves once more, and give it one more try
When either of us ought to be, the first to say goodbye.

REPEAT CHORUS

Key=Bb , Tempo 96, Length (m:s)=4:15
4 bar intro, 94 bar chorus, from bar 5 to bar 98.
Style is BLUE+.STY (Classic Country Shuffle+)

Everything about this says "Classic Country", Alan...

Written in a classic style - both lyrically and melodically.

Classic Country instrumentation - just right. Good mix.

Classic Country vocal.

Well done.

What a tune, Alan! I loved the groove of this, and the old school country vibe this tune has. I found the subject matter true to old school country to. Not a thing I would change here!

Thanks so much for sharing smile

Man, this song has a great hook.

I love what you have done with it in this style, but I also hear another arrangement in my head in a whole other style. I think I might like to try and cover this, if you give me permission.

I agree completely. And I might add that you probably have to be American to make it sound like you did.
Although we Europeans ;-) give that country a try now and then, it's not the same .......(but every now and then we keep on trying ;-))

Alan,
If you`d said this is a cover of hit from back then I`d have believed you, its that good.
Authentic in every respect... including the character of your vocal.
If I were you I`d send it in to the project.

Hi Floyd,

Thank you very much. All those nice comments. When I do these old classic songs, I try to write, sing and create backing tracks that are as authentic as possible to the real thing - rather than a "modern remake" of opf the classic style. No matter the genre, we try to write the lyric as we think it would have been written in that era. Many people trying to write songs reflecting an era past end up use contemporary writing standards. We try tgo be original.

Thus, your comments put a huge smile on our faces. Thank you so much!

Alan

Hi David,

Thanks! Very pleased you liked it and appreciate you saying so. I love this old country 4/4 shuffle music.

And yes ... by all means ... you are welcome to give it your treatment any way you please. I'll be interested in hearing what you hear! Have at it!!!

Alan

Hi Rob,

Thank you very much! Glad you liked it.

When I lived in Germany (1971 - 1988, with a 5-year break in the middle) I went to several "Country Jamborees". I found the Dutch, the Danes and the Brits did the best country music of all the Europeans. There are many very good country bands in Europe.

One of my favorite pedal steel players is Sara Jory from Ireland. The only thing I find where some European bands perform country music is they sometimes tend to overdo the "twang".

Thanks again. Give my best to Anne-Marie.

ALan

hey Kenny ...

You have no idea how much I appreciate all that. Ray Price is my all-time favorite singer, regardless of genre. My next favorites are jazz singers - Steve Tyrell and Diana Krall. And Andre Bocelli is right after them. My musical tastes are greatly varied!

The Ray Price analogy is a real feather in my hat. I was incredibly sad when he passed away. I had the opportunity to play behind him in St. Charles many years ago.

Wishing you the very best,

Alan

Hello Robert,

Thank you very much! This is the music I grew up with and played for many years. I would have added a lead guitar part but he very rarely had lead guitar breaks in his sings. He was noted for twin fiddles and emotional pedal steel. I wanted to keep this as original as possible, so no lead guitar part.

Thank you for those kind words. Based on the comments I've receive3d, particularly yours, I think I'll submit it tomorrow. Thanks again!

Alan

Alan I think this my favorite song of yours. Incredible vocal and the lyric and so country. Again what blows me away is how you make it slow easy sliding into the different genres. You do such a good job of them all. Well done

Hi Scott,

Thank you so much! I really appreciate all those very nice comments.

As far as the various genres ... I truly enjoy almost all genres. professionally, I primarily played Country & Classic Rock. Yet, when I went home, I'd put on a Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Robert Gullet, Sammy Davis, Jr. or Percy Faith album. My thought is, far the most part, there isn't a lot bad music; just some good music played poorly in many instances.

As I mentioned to another reviewer, my 2nd & 3rd favorite singers are Steve Tyrell and Diana Krall - about as far away from this Country 4/4 shuffle as you can get.

I appreciate you noticing that. I'm hoping to do a couple of videos where I'm playing lead guitar and, possibly, singing. We'll see!

Alan

I was expecting the Martha White or take home a package of TN pride to come up after! Seriously, this sounds like it could have been on the opry. Great job Alan!

Ha! Loved the Martha White reference. I remember them so well. And that's quite a compliment. Thank you so much. I worked hard at keeping this original, rather than a remake. Thanks again!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
