Is anyone else having issues with piano RealTracks? I have tried using them on some of the songs I am working on but I am not having much luck. It seems to me that there is distortion and phasing issues happening but I am not sure why. I don't seem to have this issue with other instruments. I have tried numerous different tracks but the piano sounds seem poor.

I am working on a ballad with a tempo of 80bpm and I have tried several of the Acoustic, Solo-Accompaniment tracks as well as the Rhythm CountryBalladJohn 65, so it is not an issue due to a RealTrack tempo range mismatch.

If someone wants to hear a sample, send me an email address and I can send a sample.

I have a fairly decent studio setup so I would expect better piano sounds. I am looking at using only Midi for the piano sounds now.

Darren,

I'm not having issues with any piano RealTracks. I notice you have 2017 Audiophile. Have you tried temporarily renaming the WAV or AIF piano files to force use of the wma files? That way you can see if it makes a difference using different files.

What RealTracks are you using? Perhaps you can post an audio sample and the RealBand SEQ or SGU file to the cloud so we can download and test your files on our computer system.

You can use the RealCharts as they are recorded at the same time on the Yamaha Acoustic/Midi piano, so you will get the same playing but be able to change the tempo. I think you will find all of them in the MidiSuperTracks.

I use them with RapidComposer then I can easily move any phrase across any key/scale/chord and RC will fit it.

I am a big fan of biab piano realtracks and the piano midi supertracks. Have not heard the problem you are describing. Send me a copy and I will give a listen. PM with email sent.

Oh, by the way is this exclusive to RealBAnd for you or do you have issues in BIAB or another DAW?

Okay so I have attached a link for the seq file. I removed the vocal tracks to decrease the file size. Ignore tracks 3, 9, and 10. I generated four different piano tracks on tracks 16, 17, 18, and 19. The song started life in BIAB and was moved into RealBand.

Here is the link, sorry the file is so big, but if anyone can't download it I could cut the song in half too.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/pj6eu4358alr91b/Sample%20Song%20-%20Piano%20Issues.SEQ?dl=0&m=

Let me know if it doesn't work.

Thanks

Darren

I can't use Midi SuperTracks right now on this machine unless I generate the SuperTrack on my other computer where I am running an older version of RealBand. This is the Midi SuperTracks issue with the current version. (See other forum topic).

I have noticed the pianos sounding poor in BIAB as well.

Thanks

Darren,

I suspect that what you are hearing are audio artifacts. These are due to using tracks at tempos other than the tempo for which they are designed.

PG Music say that the range of tempo-stretching or tempo-compressing that's workable with Realtracks is -10 bpm and +15 bpm. That is, a RT designed to be played at 100 bpm could be stretched to play around 90 bpm and compressed to play around 115 bpm.

That being said, I find that Piano RTs are particularly sensitive to stretching and compressing. Recently, I had a song that used piano. The tempo was 80 bpm (like your song's tempo) and a RT designed for use at 65 bpm (which fits with the +15 bpm) had too many artifacts for me to use.

You can tell which tempo a RT is designed for by the numerals at the end of its name. For example, RT 887 ends with 100. This indicates that it's recorded at a tempo of 100. This means that it will probably be ok if it's stretch to 90 bpm or compressed to 115 bpm.

RT 1006 in your SEQ file is designed for use at 85 bpm. This should sound reasonably ok at 80 bpm. Because it's being stretched though (i.e. used at a slower tempo), it might have some noticeable audio artifacts. The other RTs you've used are designed for 65, 100, 110 and these are much less likely to work satisfactorily.

As others above have mentioned, MIDI Supertracks are the way to go. They are not affected by tempo in the same way as RTs.

Regards,
Noel

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
