I've just started looking at BIAB 2017, and have been playing around entering chords and notation. To check out the notation, I've been manually entering a piano piece I have from the sheet music, and have run into a few issues.

Firstly, is it possible to enter notes on ledger lines above the bass staff some times, while also entering the same notes on the treble staff at other times (and vice-versa for notes below the treble staff)? All I can find is the ability to move the staff split point, but I want to be able to specify which staff each note goes on on a note-by-note basis, so I can get something that looks like this (which is from Beethoven's Pathetique sonata):

Secondly, is there any way to specify a time signature that's not based on multiples of four? The piece I'm trying to enter is somewhat unusual (not the Pathetique), but it has bars with a time signature of 13/16, which is like 3.25/4 and not an option. At the moment all I can do is make it 4/4 and put 3/16s of rests at the end, but that will then play back with a pause where there shouldn't be one.

Thirdly, a minor issue, is there a way to remove an accidental symbol from being displayed when it isn't necessary? For example, the key signature is B-flat and one bar has an E-natural, which needs the accidental, but then a couple of bars later there's an E-flat which is also being given a flat accidental when it's not needed. I'd sooner it wasn't there, but can't find a way to remove it.

Thanks.

Waynes, welcome to the forum.

It is important to understand that the BIAB notation is not a full featured tool.
You will never be able to enter your piano piece in BIAB and get the same rendering as your sheet music. Especially for classic music.
If you really want high quality scores, you have to select dedidacted notation softwares as Finale, Sibelius, and others. You also may use a free software called MuseScore.

For your first question, I only know you can choose the split point. I fear that the answser to you question is no.

2nd question : 13/16 signature can't be entered in BIAB.
Presently you can have a 3/4 or 4/4 signature depending of the selected style.
In the song, you can change the time signature, to get 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4 by using the F5 key.

3rd question : superfluous accidental can't be manually deleted.

Welcome, Wayne’s. I concur with John-Luke on 1 & 2.
I thought you could fix a courtesy accidental. Checking...

Re. question#3

"Brackets (#) are drawn around accidentals after a bar line as a courtesy, where no accidental is required."

From the BIAB manual.

That is not always applied, that I can see.

I was easily able to force a courtesy parentheses. Go into Editable Notation Mode, right-click on a note, select Edit Note, and choose an option under Force Accidental.

If I select a Natural when the note is already supposed to be natural, it gives me the courtesy parentheses. I couldn't produce a test the other way, but try editing this on your example.

Thanks for your responses. I did get the impression the notation tool wasn't fully-featured.

The split point thing still allows the notes to be entered so that they'll play as intended in the software, but it could be very difficult to play on a piano when printed out with notes from left-hand chords spread amongst right-hand notes, etc.

And I realise that a 13/16 time signature is very unusual, though the example I was using was not classical music (it was the intro to Firth of Fifth by Genesis). Still, it's not something I would generally want to use - it was pretty much by chance that I picked that piece to try out the notation tool with.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
