Hi Just wondering about panning a song I have,
Cello,Violin 1,and Violin 2 and Piano with vocals.
So Ive tried out a panning from a previous post for a quartet but I found no room for the vocals or I incresed them and the balance with the music was narrow. How far wide can I pan an instrument?and the wider I go should I increase Stereo width?The vocals are soft sleepy/dreamy female vocals.
At the moment I have the Violins Right and Left about halfway or a little more and the Cello and Piano closer to the centre on either side.How much further wide can I go or how wide would a Studio go?I know its a broadsweep question but any advice warmly welcome such as a sucessful panning plan from a previous song you had with Vocals thanks Hugh

I use the following chart for my orchestra settings. In your case I would pan the violins on the left, the piano slightly to the right and the cellos on the right. How far to pan? I look at it from where I would be sitting. If I'm dead center of the first public seating section I would pan the 1st violin at 10:00 o'clock, singer at 12:00 o'clock, piano at 1:00 o'clock and the cellos at 2:00 o'clock. If I'm closer then spread wider: i.e. the conductor would be 3:00-9:00 o'clock or 180 degrees left to 180 degrees right. Farther away the closer the spread.

In other words the spread is up to you but the orchestra seating is pretty standard. String or brass ensembles off course are different.

Thanks Mario as always great help.I will try that out.So interestingly you would put both Violins on the same side,is that to keep space for the Cello?Hugh

In a full orchestra, as shown in Mario's diagram, violin 1 and 2 parts are often the same or very similar, and are usually cued the same by the conductor, so it makes sense to keep them seated together.

But you are describing a string quartet with a piano instead of a viola. The two violins are usually together on the left as the audience views it (first violin, further left), the cello on the right, [the missing viola would be in the middle], and the piano behind the string players, with the pianist sitting on the left side as the audience views it (that's more a function of how the piano is curved and the lid is raised).

I wouldn't pan them so wide it becomes obvious. My general rule is to increase the panning until you can clearly hear the separate placement, and then back it off (more to the center) a bit.

String quartets usually function as a pretty close knit group so the panning won't be too much, in my view. I'd start with something like 15-20% left Violin 1, 10% left Violin 2, Viola 10% right, Cello 15-20% right. With piano, I nearly keep it centre because, if it's a Realtrack piano, it is produced as stereo (bass on the left and the lower the note, the further left; treble on the right and the higher the note, the further right). Vocals are always best in the middle in my opinion.

Hi Noel, ur two pence is great,I didnt realize about A realtrack piano being in stereo should be more central which makes sense.Listened to Borodin and its so clear. thanks again Hugh
