So you can instantly double the elbow room of the improv and retain tempo.

Interesting idea that would save time. Dan, are you suggesting doing this to the whole song, or perhaps also have the ability to highlight a section (for soloing - improv as you said) and do just that section?

The whole song, Matt. It used to work that if you pressed EXPAND while the song was playing without changing tempo, 2 bars of B flat would just turn into 4. But if you did it with the song stopped, a 100 tempo would become 200.

Now....the tempo doubles regardless. It's a feature I've always use daily-especially on long form songs like End of a Love Affair, The Song is You, or Cherokee. Depending on tempo, you may want to halve or double the chord time. And while EXPAND or REDUCE while the song was playing USED TO make the change without altering tempo....now it ALWAYS halves or doubles it.

I wonder did it work before with MIDI and doesn't work the same way now because of the challenges to do the same thing with RealTracks?

INDEED, Video Track! It should've been more obvious to me. It is a change that affects real tracks. In a midi style song, it behaves as it always did...without the tempo change. Thanks for pulling my coat

You're welcome. I only took a guess actually.
MIDI would be able to do that on-the-fly (with some clever programming smile ). RealTracks, definitely not so straightforward.

Good theory but I don't follow why it would be a problem with RealTracks. We now have the ability to halve or double RealTracks and, as of version 2017, do the same for RealDrums. We can do it manually while choosing them, or just let the program decide as we change the tempo incrementally.

Dan indicated that the feature allowed one to press EXPAND while the song was playing. He mentioned:

Because RealTracks are generated in advance, I would think that this couldn't be undertaken 'on-the-fly', or "while the song was playing", so to speak.

OK, thanks. I missed that part about "while the song was playing" because I didn't think anyone would seriously attempt that. I guess I was missing out!

Trevor,

That was a clever deduction on your part! Nicely done!

........because I didn't think anyone would seriously attempt that.

Matt-
It was neither laziness nor overly high expectation that made me push the button while the song was playing. It just worked that way....as simply as muting a part with a keyboard shortcut. Picture yourself blowing over "All the things you are", wanting some musical elrom room so there are now TWO bars of Fm7, you push the expand button...and voila, you're there!
As I said, in the stopped state it was trickier. The program WOULD double the tempo, needing the adjustment. But "on the fly" it kept it in line. Real Tracks did change all of this, adding an extra step of having to "halve the tempo" once the chords are expanded. Thanks everyone for your valuable input. and Trevor....your "shot in the dark" made this crystal clear.

Thanks, I got it, Dan. Was this ever documented, or did you just discover it?

AMAZING!!!!
It's NOT the Real Tracks...but the TEMPO of the EXPAND that will cause it to double on the fly.
140 keeps it at the original tempo....145 becomes 290.

So Matt's "Good theory but I don't follow why it would be a problem with RealTracks. We now have the ability to halve or double RealTracks"....was right on the money

Sometimes it takes time for answers to appear. Please feel free to test this out for yourselves. But the answer now seems to be...at a tempo of 145 or above, ....changing expand on the fly...doubles the tempo. Thanks to all.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
