Thanx for sharing. He is good and I just subscribed to his site.

He hit the nail right on the head with this video.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

I've watched several of Rick's videos.

He's looking out for the industry in general. I don't blame him for being annoyed when parts of the industry fail to recognize or value his input.

It's not the industry per se as in actual people. It's just another automated bot that's going to end us all of we're not careful.

The rise of the machines?
Or UMG's workers just 'doing their job'?

I actually have mixed feelings about this, but if you find interest, here is more on the topic.

That video just went into more detail as to WHY Rick ranted in first place and he essentially concurs: he has same frustration.

What are you mixed feelings relative too? They shouldn't be allowed "fair use" (non-abusive fair use)? or they aren't as good as a live teacher (BTW I concur that they are no substitute for a real live teacher but for someone like me it is still useful)? or ...?

I'm relatively new to jazz, and really a new born where gypsy jazz is concerned, at least with respect to actually playing it (guitar) and devoting time to critically & analytically listening to it.

None of my old co-workers or friends (except here - wink ) are musicians and I don't gig or go to any place that has live music, not much jazz of any kind in New Mexico anyway. So my resources are books, software tools like the PG learning/teaching video products (I have ALL of them), and now these YouTube's (Rick, Aimee Nolte, and the like, and especially a score of gypsy jazz and jazz guitar players/teachers), to re-learn music from the ground up and gain any insight and playing techniques they impart or that I can glean.

Hi Larry,

I think that if it is an educational video with a one minute or less section of a song then it should be allowed.

If it is the whole song and no permission was granted then no.

Concur Completely!

The WHOLE song, or even a significant portion (yes I know "significant portion" is subjective) WOULD be abusive and I won't allow it either.

But a 4 bar or 8 bar snippet here and there or even a minute of a ten minute song - we'll call it the 10% usage allowance rule.

But since I, and we, don't make the rules it's just a suggestion (for the NSA to pass on to UMG whistle) .

I'm kind of on the fence regarding this one.

Back in the mid 90s a Canadian TV show called "The Rez" approached SOCAN, a music publishing company, to use part of a song I wrote as background music in a bar room scene in one episode of the show. Just another example of how classic Country music and bars go hand in hand. grin

The reason I registered my song in the first place was because a long time musician friend was including it - with my permission - on a CD he was putting out. It was one of those "John Doe and friends" format. Seeing that he was going to be selling the CD it had to contain original songs only. But I started getting a little suspicious when the friend told me that we should get it registered in both our names. I told him no and then went to the SOCAN office the very next day to put it in my name only. This was the first time I had ever copyrighted a song and really didn't know what I was doing or what to expect. I was a total newb.

When the CD came out I started getting small monthly cheques from SOCAN. As the CD started to sell more and more the small cheques were growing. Then the TV thing started. I only got one cheque from it's first season and the show stopped production after two seasons. But the show still ran repeats for three seasons, meaning that I still collected a few more cheques.

Now I'm certainly not saying that I could retire on the money I was getting. Lets just say I couldn't go out and buy a Porsche. I couldn't even go out and buy a five hundred dollar junker with it. But it sure had me busting at the seams with pride. And yeah... I would be lying if I said that it didn't stroke my ego a bit as well. But I always kept that part of it to myself. I surely wasn't a blowhard going around bragging about it. But it sure felt good inside knowing that I was the only guy in all the local circuit bands who was actually getting royalties from a song that I had written.

OK... so now that I've finished bragging grin I'll get to my point. If it weren't for my friend mentioning anything about copyrighting the the song I would never have done it. It would never have crossed my mind because up until then I knew absolutely nothing about any of it. So even if the song wasn't copyrighted I would have still put it out there and still feel great knowing that my song was out on a CD and on a TV show and that people were actually listening to it. If someone was using a part or the whole song in their project I'd be OK with that. My song would be getting promoted.

Bobby

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
