Hi Larry,

I just triple checked the logs and there is no mention of chkdsk. I have no idea what happened.

The only time that this computer is on-line is to update software that either is a PITA to do off-line or has no off-line service available. Thus my Ethernet card is mostly disabled. I also keep Defender turned off because if it is on it has a propensity to slow my DAW to a crawl. I also keep anti-malwarebytes turned off for the same reason.

After each software update I update and run both Defender and anti-malwarebytes. After they are finished those two are turned off and the Ethernet card disabled. Note that no other anti-virus was installed on this computer.

The system was running fine, as I was able to turn those off and on with no problem. I turned them off, shut down my system, and went to bed. The next day I had the problem all over again.

Today I DLed the free Avast anti-virus. Thus far all is fine, i.e. I have shut down and started it with no problems. We shall see in the morning if all is still OK. Note I scanned everything with Avast and it didn't find any viruses either.

Thanx for you time and help - MarioD

PS - I'm going to buy another 1 TB HD just in case.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Hey Mario, for the network on/off, I just use the following 2 DOS command lines each in their own .BAT file with shortcuts on the desktop. That way I can turn the network off and on with a click.

I also have the DISABLE one set up in Scheduled tasks to turn off the network overnight each night at the same time and have the window prompt me that it's going to turn off in 1 minute. That way I can stop it if I'm working on something online.

netsh interface set interface "Ethernet" ENABLED

netsh interface set interface "Ethernet" DISABLED

I don't turn off anything else and Microsoft seems to not have any issues with updates.

Also "Ethernet" above is the name of my main network connection. Could be different in your case.

Mario,

(1) This might help:

It was sent to me by Microsoft after a posting to their community:

(First, set a Restore Point, just in case.)

Open up your Command Prompt window (Start Menu-->Windows System-->Command Prompt) and type (note the spaces):

sfc /scannow

[Shift]-[Ctrl]-[Enter] to run as administrator

After the error report, even if nothing is found, type:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

[Shift]-[Ctrl]-[Enter] to run as administrator

I hope that the same magic occurs for you that occurred for me---everything was back as it should be. Also, I noticed no recent data losses.

(2) I'd say you're due for an update. The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update cleared up issues for me, including a Windows Defender error that was introduced by Driver Assist (I do NOT recommend this program) and could not be rectified by the outdated version of Windows 10. It also makes Edge run faster, more reliably, resolves issues for it, and does not delete Favorites for Edge like previous updates did (although, I would still export my bookmarks/favorites from within Edge before I updated, using the export option in the upper-right "•••" menu (Settings->Import from another browser->Export to file). I'd say you're due for an update.

Good luck.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
