I just fired up Real Band 2017 on Windows for the first time, chose the software synth at startup (I think), entered chords, hit play. The song evidently plays, but no sound.
Clearly some problem with audio setup, but where to look?
- I'm using what seems to be the default style, ZZJAZZ - no sound over 2 count-in bars, no sound while playing marked chord - BIAB, Audacity, Spotify all work fine - Audio Preferences set to: 16bit 44.1, MME - Drivers: "Microsoft Sound Manager" and "Microsoft Sound Mapper" are selected and at the top.
Honestly, all I did was an install, selecting all defaults. Why me, Lord?
My Input Drivers are (in this order): - Microsoft Sound Mapper (highlighted) - Microphone (High Definition Aud - Microphone (Digital Video Recor - Line In (Digital Video Recorder
My Output Drivers are (in this order): - Speakers (High Definition Audio (highlighted - Microsoft Sound Mapper - Speakers (High Definition Audio - Speaker (Digital Video Recorder
I installed BIAB 2017 from a PGMusic distributed usb stick, onto my Windows 10 Enterprise 64bit laptop. I took all the defaults at install time.

That is a Midi style so you need a midi device to play it. What is your Midi Devices set to ???? Click on the Midi Devices button at the top. To take a pic press Print Screen button on your keyboard, use Alt+PrtScrn to take a pic of current window, Open Paint and paste, save it as a JPG, use the advance reply not quick reply to attach image.
Take a look and note down all of the Audio Settings etc that are being used in BiaB (Options > MIDI/Audio Driver Setup), and make sure that RealBand is set to use the exact same settings.
BIAB & RB2024 Win.(Audiophile), Sonar Platinum, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M Monitors, Pioneer Active Monitors, AKG K271 Studio H'phones
In Band-in-a-Box, you can simply type in chords, pick a style, hit Play, and hear something, but RealBand works very differently. It doesn't automatically generate anything when you hit Play. If you look in the Tracks window, tracks are likely all empty.
It sounds like you needed to open a song that you'd created in Band-in-a-Box already (recommended), or hit the Generate button on the RealBand toolbar, then "Generate All BB Tracks", if you want to create the song only using RealBand.
If you'd like to make sure your audio and MIDI settings are correct, the demo song Listen.SEQ in the X:\RealBand\Samples folder is a great test, as it contains audio and MIDI tracks.
I want to think that the default Microsoft sound card synth doesn't work because I had to specifically set up TTS to be my default synth. As soon as I did that I had sound.
this was my problem with no sound when I first started. If you have sound in BB it's because you have a synth in it. I think you need to do the same thing in RB.
I'm pretty sure audio should play if you have the driver set up properly, but midi based tracks won't, and that includes the count in.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
