I have an old computer (windows vista) and an even older version of BIAB (2005). I just bought 2018 and downloaded the installer, but can't get the installer to run. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try to get the installer to run?

Thanks.

Hello Charles,
What happens exactly when you try to run it?

Thanks for replying...I have fixed that problem (there were issues with security settings on the installer).

I was able to install 2018, but now I can't get it to run. I get an error that says "entry point not found". Any ideas with this?

Thanks again.

Charles,

As you will have already discoverd, many things have changed since 2005 BIAB.

One of the less obvious changes is that it's necessary to run the program in Administrator mode.

To run BIAB in this mode...

1. Close BIAB.

2. Start the program by right-clicking on the startup shortcut and selecting "Run as administrator".

Does that help? If it does...

To set this option permanently, right click on the startup shortcut, select properties and under the "Compatibility" tab, activate the option "Run as administrator".

When I had Vista, I also disabled User Account Control (UAC).

Regards,
Noel

Anti Virus programs are notorious for causing installation problems. Glad you got it sorted out.

Charles,

Mike's comment about antivirus software is well worth considering, too.

I use Avast! and I have the \bb and \Realband directories excluded from being checked.

Noel

I uninstalled and reinstalled biab, but still can't get things working. This is what's happening:

In the bb folder there are two versions of biab, bbw and bbw3 - each is about 15MB. I tried running each as administrator. I do not have any antivirus programs running (that I know of, at least)

When I try to run bbw I get the following error: "The procedure entry point MFTEnumEX could not be located in the dynamic link library MFPlat.DLL"

When I try to run bbw3 I get the following error: "This application has failed to start because libsndfile-1.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem".

A realband icon was added to my desktop and that opens, but I don't know if that's biab or not - I didn't have that with my 2005 version.

Thanks for any further input people may have.

Charles,

Before going any further, can you please give the path for your BIAB installation.

Was it the default c:\bb?

Also, did you install the entire program to your hard drive or did you do a minimum install and then run some program components off the USB drive?

Lastly, what are you computer specifications... RAM, CPU speed, Soundcard?

Regards,
Noel

I downloaded the installer and installed everything into the default folder c:/bb

computer information (don't laugh):

vista service pack 2

2 GB RAM

63GB free space on hard drive

processor: celeron 440 @ 2GHz, 1 core, 1 logical processor

don't know about soundcard - computer says realtek high definition audio if that's helpful

Thanks.

I also do this as above with Avast

But i also normally temporary suspend Avast for an hour or so during install of BIAB as the installer file location is where ever i have downloaded to, or installing from and therefore not included in the above exclusions.
Don't forget to re enable after,
Mike

I am guessing that installing BIAB2018 on this machine will be like stuffing 20 lbs of potatoes into a 10 pound bag. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Another way other than trying to install is to download Geekbench and report the single-Core score.

I got the pro version, so I thought I did have enough space on hard drive. I've got 63GB and the requirements were 15GB+ for full install and 10GB for pro realcombos. Also, I checked all of the other parameters before I bought it and I thought that I had what was required. Am I misunderstanding what I need?

Thanks.

Not at all, Charles. From what I can tell, you've done your homework and given what PG Music advise, you've got the minimum requirements for the ProPak.

Once you have BIAB up and running, you will most likely need to deactivate "Fast generation of Realtracks". That's a problem and solution for another day, though. At the moment, it's about getting BIAB to run.

Regards,
Noel

Charles,

I have been puzzling over your problem and there is one thing that you need to try.

When you install the program, it's necessary to have full access to areas that the User Account Control blocks.

To get that access, do the following....

1. During the installation of BIAB, disable UAC (User Account Control). UAC presented problems for me when I had Vista and it took me a while to work out what to do.

To disable UAC, go to the below link and follow the instructions for "Method #4 - Using Control Panel".

https://www.petri.com/disable_uac_in_windows_vista

Windows will tell you that disabling UAC is not advisable, etc., but it's only temporary. So ignore any of the doom and gloom messages Windows will give you.

When you reboot your computer to engage the disabled UAC, it might be worthwhile disabling your internet connection. That will reduce any potential problem with viruses. (I've never done this but it is a precaution.)

2. When the computer has rebooted, right-click on the installer exe and select "Run as administrator".

3. Between having UAC disabled and using "Run as administrator" the BIAB installation will definitely be able to write/copy the necessary DLLs and registry details.

I suspect that when you installed both the first and second times, the installer didn't have suitable read/write/copy permissions and couldn't do all that was required because it was blocked by Windows.

4. Once BIAB is installed, and with UAC off, try running BIAB by using "Run as administrator".

Is that any better?

Regards,
Noel

Just a follow up for those who read/replied if interested:

Apparently, there was some sort of compatibility problem with BIAB 2018 and it wouldn't run with Vista (and maybe with XP). PG Music fixed the issue with the latest build (505 I think).

It now runs on my old Vista computer without any problems that I've encountered. It was worth the hassle to get it to work so I could use the real tracks and other features new since my 2005 version.

Thanks to those who replied and to PG Music for their quick response to fix the problem.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
