"The Rain Song" is the story of a husband -- somewhat of a homebody -- who is reluctant to walk in the rain with his free-spirited wife:

https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v3/player.cfm?type=single&songid=13663744&q=hi&newref=1

Style is: B140_GB.STY. Contemporary Med. Bossa / All RealTracks
Key of B (I think?), tempo @ 155, meter = 4/4

Craig Scott on Real Drums/Bossa Brushes
Neil Swainson on acoustic bass, RealTrack #464
Oliver Gannon on electric rhythm guitar, RealTrack #467

At the bridge, and at the end of the song, P. J. Perry solos on flute, Real Track #705, the "bluesy" variation, and also on alto sax, Real Track #475.

Intro flute solo is a Uberschall loop fragment.
MIDI strings & piano arrangement rendered by Miroslav Philharmonik.
MIDI vocal "Ooos" rendered by SampleTank Vocal Collection.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Of the lyrics, please note that the husband (me) sings the lyrics in that are in standard font; the wife (Courtney Grace, who recorded my recent song post, "How Do You Know When Someone Loves You"), sings the lyrics that are in italic font. Lyrics sung in unison and/or harmonized are in bold font.

VERSE ONE

Oh, look, it’s raining, and I don’t want to go out
Oh, stop complaining, my wife says with a pout
I’ve got the blues, dear, and of that there’s no doubt
I don’t want to go out in the rain

VERSE TWO

You could imagine, the rain is not what it is
How about champagne, dear – raindrops that fall with a fizz!
You are so clever, oh, yes, you’re some kind of whiz!
Now, let’s go out and go walk in the rain

REFRAIN(???)

The air smells like perfume
From flowers in full bloom!

(In unison, harmonized)
Everywhere the rain has fallen looks so new…
It’s not a strain to maintain that the rain is a good thing to view!

VERSE THREE

How nice the world is, when it’s dripping and wet
I’m glad you noticed, so you don’t have to fret
I know I love you, and on that you can bet
I’m so glad we went out in the rain

VERSE FOUR

The rain has stopped, now, and the sun is so bright
But it’s so hot, now, that I can’t wait for the night!
And I agree, dear, so there’s no need to fight
Let’s go home and stay cool in the dark.

ENDING VERSE

And then tomorrow we’ll go to the park…
Or, to the ocean and swim with the sharks…
Or to the sky where we’ll fly with the larks...
(ad-lib, or scat to fade out)

To those of you who listen to, and comment on the song, thank you. You're the best friends I'v never met laugh !!!

bluage, you did a wonderful job putting this track together! The way the male/female vocal parts work off of each other is professionally delivered ! This jazz track should be thoroughly enjoyed by anyone who's into the genre ( I'm one )! Great job working that flute into the song, it's what really give it sparkle! Thanks, Torrey

Loren,
Wonderful musical conversation - Courtenay is a great singer and you sound so darn in sync together you could be, well- married!
Musically smooth and delightful use of the flute.
This is not my genre, so you`ll forgive me for saying the back and forth of the vocals reminded of Dan Hicks.
Needs several listens to catch the nuance.

Robert

HI Loren,

What a great song! the tightness of the vocals is fabulous! You and Courtney were splendid. Love the arrangement and the mix. This is kick-back and take it easy at a fast pace. I know, it sounds like a contradiction, but that's how it came across to me.

This is a great piece of musical entertainment and a terrific example of the flexibility of BIAB. What a super listen! Thanks for the treat! Wishing you the very best,

Alan

If someone told me this is a song written by Tom Jobim I would have certainly believed them. And for me this one of the greatest compliments - Jobim is a musical hero of mine.
Wonderful song Loren. Really really great.

Hi, Mr. Bliss...

Thank you for listening. Ms. Grace deserves the "lion's share" of your compliment on the "professionalism" you perceived in the song. She recorded her part remotely after I e-mailed the track to her.

Sincerely,

LOREN

It would nearly impossible to speak about anything concerning bossa nova music without mentioning Antonio Carlos Jobim. Thank you for listening!

"Cool" certainly was something I was aiming for, thank you!

Hi, "Robertkc"...

I'll have to look Dan Hicks up and give him a listen, but if anything about "The Rain Song" reminded you of his music, then I must be in good company.

Thank you for listening!

You've taken the amazing abilities of this product and used your skills to generate a masterpiece.

This is knockout from the very first note.

The choice of style, the instrumentation, the fills, the vocals, the everything, is, well, just sensational.

Hi Loren and Courtney

Love the jazz, the arrangement and the phrasing.
Have had several listens and it just gets better.
Could be from a movie and something a little Manhattan Transfer about the cool style.

Oh, and my favourite line -- 'Or, to the ocean and swim with the sharks…'

Two thumbs up. Cheers.

Wow - great job on this tune! It's got a ton of soul and character, and both of your vocal performances were absolutely spot on. It makes me think of the 60's. I love the groove here too, and honestly the arrangement and mix here sounds super professional!

Thanks so much for sharing this smile

Dear Deryk...

I appreciate your comment about my singing, as I believe Ms. Grace's professionally-trained voice really made my own sound better crazy!

By the way, I believe I should thank you and the other folks at PG Music for allowing me to post the song. Why? Because I used SampleTank vocal patches when I could have used the new "ooos" and "ahhhs" that are part of the new 2018 version.

I actually ordered the new version and await its delivery. However, before I ordered it I didn't do a thorough job reading about the new additions to the software and therefore missed the announcement about the "ooos" and "ahhhs", which I apologize for. I auditioned them and they sound gorgeous! I can hardly wait to use them in my future compositions.

After I receive the 2018 update I will re-post "The Rain Song" with the seamless and meltingly mellow "ooohs" and "ahhhs" that Mr. David Wise and Ms. Shelly Justice recorded so everyone in the User's Forum can hear how great they sound.

Gratefully,

LOREN

Hello, "RichMac"...

So, you like swimming with sharks, eh? You're a braver man than me laugh !

Seriously, though, your attentive remarks about the arrangement and phrasing song are deeply appreciated. It takes me a long, long, l-o-n-g time to decide when I've gotten those aspects of producing a song "right".

I will let Ms. Courtney know of your response to her performance. Thank you for listening, "RichMac!"

This is a really sexy song. The female vocal parts are great, and the lyrics themselves are sexy.

The arrangement is also sexy. Everything is sexy. I love music like this.

As Austin Powers: says "Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Burt Bacharach."

Firstly, everything about this production reminds us of the void of jazz tunes posted here. Given the vast number of jazz styles and RT’s that is even more unfortunate. But this song certainly made the wait worthwhile.

We’ve several times watched the great late 50’s film featuring an afternoon at the Newport Jazz Festival. This song while packed with nuances and complexities reminds us of the open airy feel of many of performances at that festival.

We could parse out everything we like and discuss it but this is one that we prefer just kicking back and enjoying the totality of the wonderful arrangement and vocals.

The word that comes to mind and best describes our feelings is “classy.”

Well done y’all! Sounds like you two are having fun.

Hello, Bud; hello, Ms. Janice...

I believe the documentary you described is "Jazz on a Summer's Day", directed by Bert Stern in 1958. Yes, it is a dream of a film about jazz music with gorgeous color cinematography and amazingly well-recorded performances.

If "The Rain Song" brought forth that "open and airy" association in your mind, then I'm humbled. It's a nice to thing to say.

"Classy" is certainly how I feel about Ms. Grace's performance. She seized upon the (hopefully) sunny feel of the song on the first take, which was done remotely as we live in different cities.

Thank you for communicating your pleasure with the song in such a colorful way!

Most sincerely,

LOREN

Dear Ms. Cooper...

Yeah, it was kind of short, wasn't it? So short, that Ms. Grace only charged me half of her usual price for recording my songs. So, now, I've learned a neat trick on how to save money...

Just kidding (about saving money, that is!).

Thank you for listening and also for liking what you heard, Ms. Cooper!

Hello, "PeterF"...

Michael Franks really created his own genre, didn't he? He was a stylist who produced truly relaxing music with memorable lyrics. Certainly something for songwriters in any genre to emulate, for sure.

Howdy, David Snyder...

Here's some definitions of the word, "sexy" that I looked up on the Web:

sex·y [ˈseksē] ADJECTIVE

1) sexually attractive or exciting

2) sexually aroused

3) exciting; appealing

I'll take the third definition so people won't think we produced the song without wearing any clothes -- presuming that on-lookers would consider such a sight "arousing" laugh !

Thank you for listening and for your titillating comments, sir!

Sincerely,

LOREN

P.S. I know the movie!

Dear Loren,

A very nice and cool bossa nova tune!
Your vocal and the female vocal are very pleasant.
The melody is also very bossa nova.
The way to use flute and strings is splendid.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
