The Rest Of My Life

No more words just the slamming of the door
After all this time you wont be here anymore

i know what I’d do if I had my way
I'd go and tell you that you have to stay

Why tell me why did it all have to end like this
now I’m at this place where everything is new
Time heals all and it is what it is
I’ve got the rest of my life to get over you

Still don’t understand how we fell apart
I can't get over us. Don't know where to start

i know what I’d do if I had my way
I'd go and tell you that you have to stay

Why tell me why did it all have to end like this
now I’m at this place where everything is new
Time heals all and it is what it is
I’ve got the rest of my life to get over you

First impression? This song is well worth the wait!

What a tremendous reminder of the tommyad sound:

The fine write
The creative arrangement
The soulful vocals
The perfect guitar accents
The crystal clear and full of dynamics mix/master

Man, this one will rip the paint right off of your heart.

As Janice just said, "more! more! more!"

Welcome back and, hey, hang around!

Tom,

Great to see you back. Hope you've gotten your world straightened out after the storm.

A good write. Simple, to the point. Exceptional production and mix (as always). Your guitar parts are a tasty addition.

Terrific listen.

Dear "tommyad"...

"The Rest Of My Life" is an ear- and soul-filling song.

By "ear" I mean the sterling production quality. You can hear clearly all the instruments. By "soul" I mean the total impact of it, which surges, and then slows, like the nature of the emotions you express through your regretful lyrics: self-recrimination, the pain of hindsight, and the small beacon of hoped-for reconciliation by correcting past mistakes.

This sounds like a deeply-felt performance. If it actually happened to you, then you recalled it with a quality of detail that makes me wish you could patch things up and get back "on the good foot" with the subject of your lament smile !!!

Touched,

LOREN

Tom,
There`s a signature sound to your productions ( as in top-shelf) and its great to hear your music again.
The guitar layers are an absolute treat.
This is a powerful, direct and still very catchy song.
Welcome back!

I actually had a lot more damage than previously reported. I am still in the process of rebuilding 2 large storage sheds and repairing the Florida room. My problem is I can’t work like I used to. Getting old blows! So did the hurricane! You were right it was a life changing experience. Music takes a back seat when all this work needs to be done. I have a backlog of songs including this one that were written before the storm. Hopefully I’ll return to writing in the new year. Great job on that video presentation. Impressive. Thanks for the nice comments. We have a birthday coming soon. Tom

Revisiting. (which I seldom do)... to say...

The prosody of this write is super.
Something that is often overlooked by lesser writers.

Made this stick in my ear (which, of course, is the intent).

Elliot, Thanks for the wonderful comments. Check out gruverider's excellent explanation of side chain processing. You'll have to do a search of his posts. That is part of it. On the mix side it's all about getting the spacing right through EQ, Reverb, Depth ( forward and back) and Imaging (side to side). Basically looking for instrument separation and trying to not let tracks step on one another. I probably tweaked this mix every day for a month. The mastering is a whole other ball of wax. I recently have been using Waves LinMB after the master is in place in Ozone 8. All I can say about this plug-in is that when used correctly it just makes it sound like a record. I then use Waves LL-3 Multi limiter for the final transparent volume boost. Sometimes the last 4 plugs in the stereo out chain are limiters stacked on top of each other. It is not recommended by the Pros and is something I've found through experimentation. Like I tell my kids-"Don't do what I do, Do what I say". Hope this helps. Every song is different and the only way you can find that bigger sound that we all chase is through experimenting. Also a little luck doesn't hurt, Tom

Tommy, that was AWESOME!!

Your songs always sound like they came right off the radio... your hooks are spot on, harmonies chime in when they need to, vocals are perfect for the genre...

This song in particular has an excellent frequency distribution... good representation of highs and lows spread across the stereo sound space with no mud at all... I could almost place each instrument on the stage. Very impactful mix.

You've got that song writing magic, and it's evident in everything you do.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
