Hiya Guys

I am a complete newbie to BIAB and have just downloaded the 2018 UltraPak version. I would love to know the technique that professional users go through when they decide to cover another artists track.

I play guitar and sing but would like to know essentially if there is a technique to take a recording and separate it so that the various parts are played separately, e.g. drums, bass, guitar, vocals etc. within BIAB. This would then allow me to cover the track by deactivating the parts I want to cover and keeping other parts that I cannot perform.

My ultimate goal being to try and replicate the parts using my own playing and style but this would come later.

I am looking to cover Connells' '74-'75

Any and all suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

If this topic has been covered in another section then by all means move this post to the most relevant forum section.

If you are trying to do the cover pretty much exactly as recorded, BIAB is not going to be able to help you here. That's not how it works nor what it was ever designed to do.

BIAB generates the various parts based on defined styles (which can use defined MIDI riffs or RealTracks/RealDrums). While many can be "in the style" of some band or performer, they won't be the songs themselves. You get the sense of the sound of the performer, but not specific song riffs.

Yes, you can record your own riffs on the Melody and Soloist (and audio) tracks, but if that's all you do, you probably should just use a DAW, because the power of BIAB is in creating backing tracks according to the various style definitions.

As to an existing recording, breaking apart the various components (drums, guitar, bass, sax solo, etc) is akin to trying to "unbake" a cake. You can't get back to the flour, sugar, eggs, milk, cream, salt, etc. There are some audio tools that attempt to do that, but success is sporadic at best.

If you want true covers, your best bet would be to start with multi-track karaoke files.

But if you want to create your own version of an existing song, then all you need is the chord progression, a style you like, and any recorded riffs you wish to include. It won't sound like the original, but it will be your version of the song. You could record your own riffs (either via audio or MIDI for specific riffs that make the song identifiable), but BIAB isn't going to do that automatically for you.

Hi Chadrips

John is correct in that realtracks are not going to help go make a cover song sound exactly like the original. You can do that with midi and there are several ways to do that, like the method that John mentioned and also using an existing midi file as a base.

However, if you are interested in making your own cover version of a song, I recently published a blog post on this topic. Maybe you will find it useful

Hiya Guys

Thanks so much for your help on this. I will take a look at more detail at your link Joanne as I really like your version of Auld Lang Syne. I reckon that I may well check out that course you have linked as i seems that I can fast track to my first demo with this information.

Could I ask what your go to resources are when looking to acquire or put together the various song parts please.

For instance I use Ultimate Guitar for my guitar tab (link below incase anyone wants it) but have never looked into how to access parts for other instruments, e.g. bass, midi, drums. What would your recommend for these parts please if you wanted to create your own style.

Also is there a resource whereby people have made covers of tracks and uploaded the BIAB files for other users to play around with please.

Thanks

Hi
I also use ultimate guitar quite a bit. You can use www.music-notes.com for sheet music. Another way is just to find a midi file on the internet and open it in RealBand. RealBand will attempt to populate itself with the chords from the midi. You can check out the music score in midi for each of the instruments. I usually replace some of the rhythm instruments with realtracks because the midi does not sound great for those. I l replace the rhythm guitar and piano as well as the drums wwith realtracks.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
