I seem to still have some baggage in my root directory with various dates going back to 1996. I'd like to be able to delete them but I'm not sure if they're files which are required by Band in a Box, or just files that somehow got there along the way over the years.
I don't know if there is a listing, but if you you got a USB drive, you might want to look at the BB folder on that drive and compare it to your hard drive installation.
I would then move the extra files off to another location and see if it breaks anything.

I just did exactly what John described. After 25 years I had many folders I had created and did not remember which ones were factory and which ones were mine.
BIAB 2024 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 6.5 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6; Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus Studio 192, Presonus Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors

Unfortunately I don't have a USB drive installation, I just downloaded the upgrades
Hence my early unanswered question "Where is the best place to store user styles". Having my user styles mixed with PG styles seems not ideal but at least they are listed in the style picker. I do have a naming convention but with good olde DOS eight character file naming that is difficult. I would like a folder say "UserStyles" or similar. I tried that but could not find them in the style picker. My songs are fine they live on another drive and that opens by default.

That is a very valid wishlist. Prior to 2018, you could store styles in either the main BB folder or in a folder called Styles. My personal preference was to store all the PGMusic provided styles in the main BB folder, and then any user styles or web-downloaded styles in the Styles folder. Now everything is consolidated into the Styles folder, so it's harder to tell which were provided by PGMusic and which weren't.

Aside from your good suggestion for a User style folder and probably a few other USER sub-folders, I'm just glad PG FINALLY cleaned up the \BB root folder and organized stuff a little - it was getting really messy (after ~27 years of collecting files in that ONE FOLDER it was a total Fibber McGee's closet)
This is an interesting observation on my end, not a problem, just an observation.
I did a search on all styles in my BB directory and found that there were a total of 846 styles located in sub-directories other then c:\BB\Styles, the majority being in C:\BB\Songs & Lessons\...
I copied those over to C:\BB\Styles and did a full rebuild. Style picker added 190 styles to the total. The vast majority of those styles again were copied from C:\BB\Songs & Lessons\...
In other words, I copied anything style I found outside of C:\BB\Styles into C:\BB\Styles. I did not overwrite those that already existed.
Those copied styles are all PG Music styles, not 3rd party styles.
As an FYI, this was from a fresh install of BIAB 2018. I have the full package.
So at the end of all this, I wound up with 190 styles that were not available before this exercise.
Teunis, I have asked, just some days ago, to PG Music people to create a User Styles folder in the Styles folder. Many users request it and it looks a worthwhile request. So wait and see. As I said in my request, before the BIAB 2018 version, we could set all the PG Music styles in the BB folder and set the User Styles in a Style folder. So, the PG Music styles and User styles were well separate and we had not a big pool where all styles (PG Music styles, User styles, Norton styles...) are mixed.
I don't know why this point has not been seen during the beta test.
As a general wish, when there is an upgrade to a new version, I would like not to lose functionalities we had before, that is what we call the upward compatibility.
In my BIAB root folder, I have three folders you don't have : DK files DOC files PAT files.
Where are these folders located in your folders ?
Interesting. Is that on a PG Music supplied BiaB 2018 HDD? I definitely don't have any of those folders (there is an X:\bb\Documentation\ folder though) This is the contents of the F:\ (root) folder of that drive on my system:
BIAB & RB2024 Win.(Audiophile), Sonar Platinum, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M Monitors, Pioneer Active Monitors, AKG K271 Studio H'phones
No, it is not a new HD provided by PG Music. Upgrade from version 2017 to 2018 on my PC. You may not have these folders but in this case where are the *.pat, *.doc and *.dk files located ?

All of the *.pat files are in "x:\bb\Data\Util\Synth Kits"
Almost all of the *.dk files are in the same location x:\bb\Data\Util\Synth Kits Except: MySetup.DK is in x:\bb\Preferences\
The *.doc files are literally everywhere, many of them in sub-folders of the products they describe.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
