Videotrack and John....

Defining 1 chord of harmony per bar should be enough for BIAB to to able to copy shots, rests and pushes in a song. If this is not a "Copy Special' bug, it's a feature that wasn't well implemented.

A practical example of usage would be making a Charleston background— with a shot on 1.... and the AND of 2. And should've been coded to "Use the beat 1 chord harmony for all subsequent shots in the bar." As it works now, i believe you have to even manually define the 8th note pushes into each bar..... PLUS the chords ...before the shots will copy correctly. This is indeed an issue that needs to be tweaked to become practical.

Okay, now I'm confused. Are you saying you want shots to play on certain beats when there are no chords shown?

Shots/rests/holds only work with a specified chord. You can't just enter ".." where you want it to play.

Otherwise, yes, you have to enter your chord progression, and that means putting the chords where you want them (even those that are off the beat, or pushed). Then the shots/rests/holds command tells those chords what to do on that beat.

And as has been shown, the copy rests command applies that embellishment to the chords that are there.

I'm happy to help, but I'm just confused now.

Yes...my desires changed mid-stream, John. I initially wanted just a shot on the downbeat for stop time choruses. But your method (and the "H" method suggested...no dialogue needed) both worked so well, I realized that having shots at different parts of the beats could open possibilities of playing along with various accented "shot-beats" through a song.

Then came the realization ( with your 'my bad' post) ....that this is not a piece of cake—for there must be existing designated chords ALREADY on those beats in EVERY measure... in order to copy the initial special measure with the desired shots....or they simply won't copy.

But a simple additional checkbox in the Copy Special dialogue could tell the program to "Copy special" all desired shots and rests...and
1. USE THE FIRST BEAT CHORD....of the "bars being copied to" for ALL the chord-shots being duplicated into that bar.

Some will say "This sounds more like a STYLE you're creating.... than a shot/rest/push function." And I see the validity of that argument. But the coding is so close already, that checkbox would open rhythmic possibilities without having to create a new style from scratch.

Once you get your song to sound right, you could take your song with all the shots in it, save it out to a MIDI file, then bring that MIDI file back in to a new BIAB project, then use the Style Wizard to create a new style that does what you are wanting in about a minute. That style could then be used for future projects that need it, and you wouldn't have to enter any double dots at all, because the riffs defined in the style already include the shots.

Just beautiful, John...though with that checkbox, Real Tracks would work as well as MIDI.
Thanks for all your input-

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
