1st time since I started using BIAB I guess since version 2004 after thousands of gigs and practice sessions it failed to boot up. What made it really bad this was a live gig.

Normally no problem just fire up my back up laptop and away we go right, or at least worse case pull out the sheet music and wing it for an hour or so? WRONG, I forgot to load my back up, again maybe 1st time in years, and of course did not bring any of the hard copies (back-up back-up) of my sheet music . . . pretty much screwed.

Lesson here . . . No matter how long you have been setting up for and playing gigs NEVER NEVER leave home without at least 2/3 tested back-up plans!

PS: Still a pretty good run all in all.

I’ve dreaded the day when that happens to me. So far, so good. I think my laptop is 6 years old, now, with everything on that one drive. I’ve saved all my files to a second drive, just in case. I’ve recently mixed-down some of my favorite BIAB tunes to wav files and carry them along on a Samsung tablet. The only problem, there, even though the files play nicely, I have to give up seeing the chord changes in real time, which is helpful in soloing.

Another good story about the need for backup systems.

I’m assuming, even though this is in the BIAB forum, that it’s your laptop that didn’t boot up and not the BIAB program. If by chance it was BIAB that failed, then let’s work the problem.

Oh sorry Matt, "it was the BIAB program" that did not boot up, that is what made it so odd.

Forgive me—I’ve been away too long—but who is the member who writes and sells accessory Styles for BIAB? He and his wife gig with the program on a laptop (an IBM, IIRC) and has a second identical setup that he carries to shows. He once described a total system failure of his main laptop during a live show, and being back up and running in about 20 minutes.

Your machine WILL break. You WILL lose your program and files. The only question is when, and the only safeguard is to have a secondary computer set up identically to the first.

Richard, you are correct, that’s Bob ‘Notes’ Norton.

Danny, delete two files and try again: intrface.bbw and Mysetup.dk

What version of BIAB? If 2018, I noticed these two files were moved to a sub folder.

Welcome back!

Yes Bob and I do have a duplicate setup . . . but I left home without it this time.

So both Murphy's Law and Complacency hit me right between the eyes today.

I am glad to see that you are taking the hit for forgetting your backup and not blaming it on Linda whistle

Ducking and running for cover my brother from a different mother!

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

J.Larry:

Since version 2015, you can make a video of any BIAB song. Wouldn't that serve as "emergency backup"? If you just did your "favorite BIAB tunes" and put them on a tablet, you could still see the "chord changes in real time".

(The BIAB Help file says this:
"You can save your song as a video that you can upload to YouTube or work with in video programs. You can make a video for the Chord Sheet or the Notation window that shows the highlighted chords or notes moving as the song plays.")

Just a thought.
Good luck!

I am at the point where I will delete all BIAB from that laptop back to 2010 I think. Anyway maybe a clean install of 2017 will take care of the issue.

I will be installing 2018 later n the week so I have to get this cleared up ASAP, besides I have a couple of gigs this week where I need the program.

Wish me good luck, until support opens Tuesday anyway, lol.

IMO 2018 is not ready for the R&R road with 508. Generating is much slower than with 2017 470 on my system. F

Thanks for the head's up, I will surely consider that before I install on my road computers.

Deleted all BIAB, reinstalled 2017 and back u running. However the shortcut still has that little "Shield" on it, not sure what that is all about.

Thanks again everyone.

Is the little shield just your virus protection telling you it hasn't been scanned?

The little shield could also be saying that the shortcut is set to "Run as administrator".

To check this, right click on the shortcut, select properties and under the Compatibility tab have a look and see if "Run as admin." is activated. If it is, leave it. If it isn't, select it and exit.

BIAB always runs best when "Run as administrator" is active.

Regards,
Noel

I think that is it, Thanks Noel.

I have a show to do on Krue.tv in an hour and will make that adjustment when I am done.

Thanks again my friend!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
