I was auditioning String Quartet Real Tracks in BIAB 2018 using a chord progression which has “Holds” at some bars, but found that “Shots” were played instead.
This led me to check out all the String Quartet Real Tracks, I made a short chord progression containing some Rests, Shots and Holds. The Shots and Holds were over full bars and half bars (beats 1&3)
The results are as follows;
2509 Cello,Bkg,Pop Ev 120 OK 2456 Cello,Bkg,Pop Sw 110 OK 2334 StrQ,Rhy,Pop Ch Ev 085 Shots only 2507 StrQ,Rhy,Pop Ch Ev 120 OK 2508 StrQ,Rhy,Pop Hall Ev 120 Shots only 2335 StrQ,Rhy,Pop Hall Ev 085 Shots only 2451 StrQ,Rhy,Pop Ch Sw 110 OK 2452 StrQ,Rhy,Pop Hall Sw 110 Shots only 2510 Viola,Bkg,Pop Ev 120 Shots only, random behaviour,sometimes on beat 4 2455 Viola,Bkg,Pop Sw 110 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3 2336 Viola,Bkg,Pop Ev 085 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3 2511 Violin,Bkg,Pop Ev H 120 Shots only, random behaviour,sometimes on beat 4 2512 Violin,Bkg,Pop Ev L 120 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3 2453 Violin,Bkg,Pop Sw H 110 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3 2454 Violin,Bkg,Pop Sw L 110 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3 2337 Violin,Bkg,Pop Ev H 085 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3 2338 Violin,Bkg,Pop Ev L 085 Shots only on beat 1, no shot played on beat 3
As far as I can determine, shots/holds are a continuing work in progress in relation to Realtracks.
If you want more information on shots/holds, head into Realtrack picker and have a look in the "Holds" column (you may have to drag the edge to make the information visible).
If two numbers are present, I interpret this (rightly or wrongly) to mean that both shots and holds are available. If only one number is present then only one of those events is currently available.
As an example, see the image below. The String RT 2453 only has 288 in the Holds column. This suggests that only shots or holds are available. By comparison, RT 1173 has 140,140 in the Holds column.
I hadn't paid much attention to that column before.
I checked out all the String Quartet Real Tracks and find that those with shots and holds have a single 3 digit number (e.g. 295). Those that have shots only have a 3 digit number followed by n (e.g. 295n). This goes some way to explain the issues I have, but I still reckon there is something wrong with RTs 2510 & 2511. I also notice that the "Held" option is greyed out when an "n" number is selected, so there goes my idea for a work-around.
Thanks for the information. Appreciate the added insight.
What I suggest is that you send the results of your experimenting, along with your thoughts, to support@pgmusic.com. The development team are always grateful to receive information such as that that you've assembled.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
