Hey Fam,

First of all, I apologize for the title gore but the word limit is on the small side in these forums.

Basically, I use my laptop (see specs in my signature) for everything. I work remotely, so I use it non-stop and have all the programs and whatnot for my job loaded onto it. Thing is, it's a lot smaller than my previous laptop (which died sometime back), and horrible for working on throughout the entire day.

I was thinking about getting a desktop for work, but then I'd have to reinstall and transfer everything, and, y'know, PAY for the dang thing as well as a monitor.

Anyway I was relating this issue to my wife when my SS, who was in the area, chimed in and advised that I should simply get a monitor and connect it to the laptop's HDMI port, and connect a keyboard and mouse into the USB ports. This actually sounds like a fantastic idea however: and this is where I'd love to get your input/advice:

1) I'm worried about latency. My job entails a lot of typing, swithcing between windows and MS programs,... just a little bit too much lag will throw off my groove (insert gif from the Emperor's New Groove here). That said, I don't know if there would be latency anyway. Is that all in my head?

2) My laptop only has 2 USB inputs(!). The mouse and keyboard will occupy both. And then, if I want to use this setup for recording along with BiaB I would require a further two (one for my Interface and one because I run BiaB of an external hard-drive).

3). Umm, there was a three,..and probably a four and five as well, but they allude me at the moment.

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated!

Do you work for somebody or are you self employed? If you work for somebody, let THEM buy you the new work computer. If you are self employed, then you ARE the boss, so get up off some of those profits and invest in yourself. Deduct it as a business expense.

As far as having only 2 USB ports, you just need one of these.

I tend to nudge people toward desktops for things like music studios or CAD work. They are just more durable for the kind of internal beating they take. That, however, comes from a person who doesn't care about portability. I would never take laptops to a gig, for example. The extra 5 minutes it would take to carry in a desktop and monitor matters not to me. I am in no hurry to race out of a gig when I finish.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

HI
As you can see from pic I have done just that,
I have a 27inch Samsung curved screen hdmi monitor connected to my Asus 15inch laptop,
And usb keyboard and mouse
The extra usb skts are taken care of in my case as my Akai EIE pro audio interface has a built in 4 port usb hub . this init is self powered by its own power supply.

Appreciate the feedback, I was actually kind of worried that having the USB connections fed through a hub would degrade the signals or something...

Agreed with all else you said, but my work arrangement is such that I purchase my own hardware :-(

No problems here with USB hubs BUT I would recommend that you purchase an AC powered hub. This way whatever you plug into to hub gets power from the hub and not from your laptop.

If that is going to be a problem because you move the laptop around a lot and you do not want to carry a power hub around then try a computer powered hub. If you run into problems with it then you will have to get a powered hub. A lot depends on how much power your computer's power supply can handle and how much of a draw you place on the hub. Everyone is different.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

For the mouse and keyboard, you should look for the Logitech products. Basically, you get a little receiver that fits into a single USB port and you can use that single device to pair with both the keyboard and the mouse. My wife and I have used this combination for several years. No latency and all works well, and no wires.

++ This ++ is basically what we use on our laptops.

I retired two years ago as a medical transcriptionist who used a company-supplied PC at home as well as a laptop which allowed me to work remotely at my girlfriend’s (and later fiancée’s) home on weekends. In my situation, the best solution was two cheap generic docking stations, also known as port replicators. It let me connect at each end with a single USB connection and one power connection, saving wear and tear on the laptop USB ports and making setup possible in minutes. Thing is, using a docking station (as opposed to a USB hub) lets each peripheral use its native connection—RJ-45, VGA/HDMI, PS-2, speakers, etc.—so there is no latency. I have used this setup for years. For instance, I no longer work, but took part of this rig on a cruise with me.

Richard.

Thanks everybody for all your great input. I just purchased this http://us.dlink.com/products/connect/7-port-usb-2-hub/ HUB, and before opening it I'm worried that as it's only USB 2.0 it might not work.

FWIW, I have two USB inputs on my laptop (1x 2.0 and 1x 3.0) and would need one of those to have my interface going in direct. So my BIAB drive would be running through the hub (which has a dedicated power supply, BTW).

Would the 2.0 rather than 3.0 be an issue, and specifically given that BIAB would be running off an external drive connected through it?

Thanks again guys!

Hi
As the hub is usb2 I would use usb2 port on the laptop for that.
This will leave your usb3 port available for any usb3 device that you might have and need the speed.

As a matter of interest usb3 skts as well as being faster can supply more current than usb2 for running devices.
Useful for external hard drives.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
