I'm trying to get out of "lurker" mode, so here's my first track in 2018. Thanks to David Snyder for helping provide the motivation.

As always, comments and critiques welcome!

You're No Damn Good

When I was just a young boy / My Daddy told me, son
If you just put your mind to it / You can be most anyone
From President to CEO / To man up in the moon
Be anything that you might want / But you can't hold a tune

[Chorus]
You're no damn good / You're no damn good
Well I hate to be the one to say it / But you're really no damn good
You're no damn good / You're no damned good
It hurts for me to say it / But you're really no damn good

I said, Pa, don't you be worried / I'll go and make you proud
Become someone important / And stand out from the crowd
I played guitar and practiced hard / And tried to be the best
But the only thing that people said / Was "Please, give it a rest!"

[Chorus]
You're no damn good / You're no damn good
Well we hate to hear you playing, boy / 'Cause you're really no damn good
You're no damn good / You're no damn good
Well we hate it when you're playing / 'Cause you're really no damn good

Well, I know that it's disheartening / Hearing that you suck
Wishing you'd been born / With either talent or some luck
If you're blessed with Tom Wait's vocal cords / Or you can't find Middle C
Here comes the final chorus / You can sing along with me

[Chorus]
No damn good / No damn good
I hear what you are saying / That this sounds like I am braying / But you still won't stop me playing
Even though I'm no damn good

I can't possibly say your song is No Damn Good.

This is quite catchy David.

Perfect choice of tracks to deliver this clever little ditty.

David,

So good to hear your voice! This old time country sound really suits you. Great track selection as well.

I really like this!

Funny lyrics. "Blessed with Tom Waits' vocal chords." smile (Actually Waits used to have a great voice, 'twas the five packs a day that did him in.)

But, the most motivational part of this, for me, is being cited as the inspiration for a song called "You're no Damned Good." It made me cry.

This is perhaps the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me in my whole life.

No, but seriously, great job Dave! More! More!

Thanks for listening! I decided it was time to take a break from my vocal synthesis program and try singing it myself for a change.

Nice song sir! I think it could have benefited from having a vocaloid backup singer..... wink

Here's Tom in 1987 joking about his voice:

Quote:
Letterman: What kind of hints does he give for throat care to you?
Waits: (With a bad Irish accent) "You can't go on singing like that." He says you're going to wind up like Frank Sinatra. I said, you mean rich and powerful?

Any time I manage to make you cry is a good day for me. wink

After years of complaining BiaB didn't have Ooohs and Aaahs, I figured that my track needed to include them instead of a Vocaloid. laugh

Thanks!

David, This is really well written fun song. Very catchy. The vocal is excellent. I really like how the bass stays on the root in the intro and then plays the regular one-five after that. Well done and hope to hear many more, Tom

Thanks, Tommy! I've got to give credit where credit is due - autotuning. smile

Plus, I let my son do the final tweaks on the mix, because I trust his ears more than mine. He ended up with a different effects chain on the vocal that came out a lot dryer. Sometime it's hard to objectively mix my own vocals.

You can thank BiaB for that intro - I let it auto-generate those four bars, and then simplified one of the chords.

Normally I'll replace the bass line with one of my own, but it made sense to keep this one simple. My bass-playing son wasn't happy with the upright going into the higher register in some spots, but agreed it was better to leave it alone and get this out the door.

I tried to incorporate Floyd's advice to turn up the drums, but with only a foot stomp, there wasn't much to work with. wink

I'll do my best to be more productive this year than in the past.

David,

Nicely done. Good grouping of instruments and a nice mix. Well sung!

A clever write! I could hear Jimmy Fallon doing this...

fj

Edit - I'm back to say "Man! this is catchy!". I can't get it out of my head... And now I'm seeing the cast of Hee Haw doing it...

I assume Junior Samples on the lead, with the folk in the corn patch popping up for the chorus?

To be honest, whenever I write anything catchy I worry that I've accidentally ripped off someone else's song and mis-remembered it as my own. If someone wants to sue me for the profits... wink

David you are damn good!

Everything about this is top shelf! I really liked the humor in this one. Your mix and vocals were spot on.

Two thumbs up.

Very entertaining David.
Great lighthearted lyrics and the repetition works well to glue no damn good in my head. Good fun.
Cheers.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
